They're both flat displays, but the technology that drives them is entirely different. It could take a lot to explain here, but I found a great article series at TechLore that explains every different kind of TV, and gives the advantages and disadvantages of each. It's very thorough, and easy to follow.

Give it a read: http://www.techlore.com/article/10497/How-To-Find-the-TV-that-is-Right-for-You/

Pick up the August copy of "What Hi-Fi and Home Cinema" magazine. In it, you'll find an expert review of 8 brand new 37" televisions. The one that came out best was a plasma - the losers were all LCDs.

The truth is, people actually prefer plasma to LCD. Check out the link below for the real story.

(By the way, do you have to manually pump oil into your car engine? No? And by the same token, plasma screens don't go dim or lose their gas, either. It's something called progress...).

Since I'm trying to decide between plasma and LCD also, I will share what seems to be the general consensus:

LCD:
Pro: Lighter weight, brighter colors, less glare, no burn-in
Con: Not good black levels, slow refresh rate on fast-moving images, viewing angle not as wide, more expensive as sizes get larger

Plasma:
Pro: True black levels, warmer colors, better with faster moving images, price is better on larger sizes
Con: Bad glare on screen surface, heavier weight, suspect to burn-in

These are just a few points to ponder, but the general opinion is that both technologies are closing in on each other so go look at some side-by-side and pick the one you like best.

it all depends on what you watch,

if you like sport, action movies and games console go for plasma, as lcd has " lagging "

You you just watch normal tv, then lcd as it has a slight better defin.

plasma will give you better brightness, contrast ratio, and yes anything from 30,000-60,000 viewing hours ( thats the gas inside, so a bit of urban myth about short life span )

Panasonic did a survey recently and asked joe public the same thing, out came the results everyone went for lcd, then they where showed lcd next to plasma and asked what was better, and guess what PLASMA WAS 60%.

But it is all down to YOU.

Hope this clears up a few things

First off, don't listen to the last four people that posted. Ill informed people is not where you should get your info. Look at the other answers people selected as best answer or the website the second guy gave.

The reason I say the other four are ill informed is because plasmas don't run out in 3,4, or 6 years. Plasmas now have a life expectancy of 60,000 hours to HALF LIFE. There are 8,760 hours in a year. If you were to watch TV 24 hours a day the Plasma would last more than 6.85 years. I doubt there are many people that watch that much TV. The average plasma in an average household will last much longer.

They both give great pictures due to new but extremely different technology. Plasma T.V. contains........ you guessed it, plasma. This plasma has to be replaced in about 6 years, so if you are one of those folks who like to hang on to your 3k investments, LCD is better for you. Also, video games look good on the Plasma (LCD too) but can cause ghosting/ image burn on the a Plasma screen, so I would not recommend playing games on your Plasma. Again, LCD is better in that respect. For the money, both are expensive but LCD is the best way to go.
