Alcohol isn't condemned in the Bible. However, drinking in excess and becoming drunk IS. There's a big difference between the two.
"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."
~Ephesians 5:18 (New International Version)~

Good question. Here's what Proverbs 23:7-9 says:
"7
For in his greed he is like a storm. "Eat and drink," he says to you, though his heart is not with you;
8
The little you have eaten you will vomit up, and you will have wasted your agreeable words.
9
Speak not for the fool's hearing; he will despise the wisdom of your words."
There's nothing there that prohibits the consumption of alcohol.
There are other verses in the Bible that condemn drunkenness -- but drunkenness and moderate consumption are not the same thing.
There are also plenty of verses -- the Cana wedding account in John is just one -- that speak of responsible alcohol consumption in a favorable light.
Why did Jesus turn the water into wine at the Cana wedding? There's some deep theology there, but it basically boils down to this: it was a precursor for his offering His blood (in the form of wine) at the Last Supper.

Because, while alcohol consumption is okay in moderation , Jesus definitely did not recommend drunkenness. Like so many young people today, maybe you do not know there is a difference. A glass of wine here and there, even a mixed drink once in a while is actually good for us. The problem is with the mindset that says, "Let's go get wasted." THAT is what is condemned in the Bible.
Besides, Jesus was a young man at that time. He was not there to change the societal practices of the day, so how could he not allow it. But I understand that you are referring to the fact that he actually participated in it. He changed the water into wine and the people who were against him called him a "wine bibber." It meant that he drank wine and associated with others who drank wine. (It was not grape juice because without refrigeration they could not have kept the juice more than a couple of days without its turning into wine.) It did not mean he ever drank to excess and ended up in a drunken stupor like so many kids do. In other countries where they allow wine use even for children (France) and turning 21 is no big deal in that regard, there is very little drunkenness.

Hello,
Alcohol or wine is not prohibited in the bible. Just is excess like too much rich food is. I doubt Jesus was a drunk.
And I agree with you - taking verses out of their context as well as being historically innaccurate is false and dangerous.
Michael
EDIT - To Coffee Pot12
I have heard that argument about grape juice from some Pentecostal Ministers and it is false
Proverbs says take not much of the wine or you will feel you are on a mast of a ship in a stormy sea and wake up the next day feeling like you have been bitten by a poison serpent then have to ask for more to quell the pain (a piece of hair from the dog that bit you!) Also the Romans had a proverb: Veritas in vino est! There is truth in wine meaning people feeling it loosen their tongues and speak the truth. I ask you then, does that sound like grape juice?
Archeologists found residues from beer and wine over the years and such drinks are nearly 8000 years or more. By the way these ministers I talked to did not speak or write Herbrew, Greek or even Latin themselves to actually go and verify their claims personally.
And I agree with you. Taking things from the bible and putting them out of their context is false and dangerous... even historical facts.

too much of anything except the lord is not ok?! <--- previous answer. (it appears you have had too much of the kool aid)
,
1. alcohol is not the same as alcoholism.
2. drunkeness is unacceptable biblically speaking
3. jesus wouldnt have turned water to wine if wine itself was wrong to consume at a wedding.
4. it aparently is not a sin to get one's father completely intoxicated (drunk) and then rape him while he is passed out, in order to get pregnant and give birth to a child conceived in both rape and incest. explain that, cause i can't.
5. a moderate amount of wine at ceremonies and various occasions was common in jesus' day and acceptable.

u can drink a beer or two, wine, and etc. but what god doesn't like is when ppl drink to get drunk. ur putting ur life in dangered because an accident Can occur, u can or somebody else could die. u can get intoxicated. when ure drunk ur attitude is very unacceptable. so those r just a few reasons alcoholism is condemned. but u can drink just dont get drunk.

it was not alcoholic wine...it was the juice of the grape which in translation to English is wine...the Hebrew language has 15 different words for juice of the grape...translators took wine to mean the alcoholic one...it isn't...
drinking in moderation is not ok....the new wine is new grape juice...grape juice......
taking verses out of context and building a false Biblical stand is wrong and very dangerous....
