I just got my drivers permit, and i don't have a car of my own, my finance has been teaching me to drive in his car, and said once i get my license his parents will let me drive one of there old cars. I don't really know how car insurance works.. my finance is still on his family's insurance, since they get a discount for multiply cars (they have 5). My question is, would there insurance cover me driving there car? or would i have to get my own plan? and can i get a plan on a car i don't own?

You would have to be put as a named driver on their insurence, or you would have to take out your own insurence. U can get insurence on a car you don't own.
Hope this helps

It seems to me this is very Dependant on which country you are in. I have a English policy, I have a friend who is not living with me named on my insurance. I am also a named driver on a car which is not registered in my name.
You are only able to drive a car if you are specifically named on a policy for a particular car or your own insurance is fully comprehensive and states that you are able to drive other cars with owners permission.

It depends on what kind of insurance plans each of them have on their individual cars. Some may have a plan that will cover other drivers of their car and some may not.
It's best to get your own plan. The sooner you do, the sooner you will get discounts. No you can't get insurance when you don't have a car. The type of car you decided to insure is a primary deciding factor of how much you will pay each month.
Lets say you get a well running but older low performance car, you will pay an average price each month. If you had a high performance car however (insurance companies have different standards for deciding what is "high performance" and what isn't) you will pay a little more each month. Most companies will give discounts once you're 25, as well as others for having Anti-Lock brakes, air bags, etc...

You do not need insurance to drive with a learners permit provideing A licensed driver over the age of 21 that is insured to drive rides with you and if you crash the car it will go on their driveing record and insurance.
If you live in the same household you can be automaticly covered to drive the car. If you simply drive the car you "borrowed" from them you are covered by "implied concent" however any claims made to their insurance if you crash the car will effect their insurance rates.

I recomend that when you get your license that you get your own insurance in your name so it will not create problems for your finance's family if you crash the car.In most cases you can insure a car to drive even if you don't own it.

You need to purchase a named non-owner policy which covers you in any car that you drive. This is the only way you can purchase insurance on yourself to drive their car. Yes, their insurance might cover the car if your in an accident but they also may fight the claim because you are not an insured driver. If you want to drive legally you need to purchase a named non-owner policy most major insurance companies offer it.

Depending on your future in-laws insurance carrier, they should be able to add your name as a lisenced driver on any vehicle that they own. Or, they may have a plan that will cover any lisenced driver. But you DO NOT under any circumstances get insurance on a vehicle that is already covered by a different plan. An alternative is for them to cancel their policy on the vehicle you are going to drive, and you pick up a policy of your own. You do not have to own the vehicle to have insurance in your name. My opinion, simply have them add you as a driver, and float them a few bucks every month to cover the added expense. Good luck.

Whoever owns the car (his parents) should have the policy for the car. If anyone else drives the car regularly (you), they should be added to the policy.

Being a new driver, your insurance will be sky high. By adding you to their policy, their insurance will go up significantly. I would talk this over with them and come up with a plan.

Years ago you could get "driver's insurance". It simply meant that whatever vehicle you drove, it was insured through you (whether it was insured elsewhere or not). Being a new driver, it may be expensive for drivers ins'ce if it is still offered. The boyfriend's folks can add you to their policy also.

I called my own insurance company to ask about that. I was told that my insurance is on the car, not me, so whoever drives the car is covered. If someone is going to be driving the car on a regular basis, they asked me to call them and have their name put on the policy, but normally anyone who drives it is covered.

I'm not sure all insurance works that way, but it's easy enough to call their 800 number and find out.

Call the insurance company. Every company's rules are a little different. Generally, you can only put family members on an existing policy.

definite it somewhat is genuine. I used to regulate a automobile condominium place of work and had dealt with this distinctive situations, yet considering the fact that I worked so heavily with the insurance adjusters they paid for the few days the automobile replaced into out of value and of path I gave them a substantially decreased daily value for doing me that choose and that i might placed that shopper into yet another automobile so all and sundry replaced into happy! I constantly recommend removing the greater insurance from the condominium automobile organization. definite you're usually lined interior the condominium, it particularly is once you're making a call on your insurance organization and ask them in the event that they're going to conceal you in a condominium automobile. In virginia there isn't any deductible for the insurance you will possibly save on the condominium automobile might desire to you get into an accident. it somewhat is somewhat something you opt to be calling around approximately to confirm what each and all of the regulations are.
