Plasma and LCD are the current favs but my friends say the rear projection has far fewer performance and repair issues. Check Consumer Reports- its worth the cost to join just for the research value.

I have the 60" SXRD and love it. It was much cheaper than going with a LCD screen, which would have been my other choice.
My wife was a bit concerned at spending so much on a TV, but any concerns immediately evaporated when I popped in a DVD.
I personally don't like plasma screens - they look fuzzy to me. I'm also among the minority who can see the color cycling in DLP, so to me, white fields look sort of bluish or purplish. So for me, it was either LCD or Rear-Projection.
The only downside to the SXRD is that since it is a rear-projection TV, you will need to eventually replace the lamp bulb which will run about $250-300. The bulb should last you 2-5 years, depending on usage.

Either way they all have there faults but my personal favorite would have to be the LCD. Rear projection screen TVs are extremelly expensive to fix when they mess up and to me just dont have the best picture quality of the 3. Plasma's are nice and thin but they have that protective plastic screen that might seem good cause its protecting the screen but at the same time it gives off a big glare on the screen which can get annoying at times. LCDs have neither of them 2 problems and just look better in my opinion. As for Sony, I would definetly go with them as well. Everything they make is great. Im looking in to the 46" Sony Bravia LCD myself. I found it on ebay for $1200 incl S&H and ins when it sells for $3,000 in stores .....great deal huh?

I'm personally really down on projection TVs, mainly because of viewing angle sensitivity. When image brightness varies greatly when I'm standing up vs sitting down, that's not a good thing. My friend just bought a 55 inch Samsung DLP. Great picture when you're sitting down, but don't try to roam around the room.
The best picture quality I've seen is on a 40 inch Sony Bravia XBR2 LCD unit. I could be anywhere in the room, even all the way to the side, or doing squats up and down and it looked fantastic.

If you want it for watching sports and playing video games on, plasma is definitely out. You have to worry about burn it (it happened to a friend of mine- he has the Halo 2 status icon permanently burned into his screen) and plasma TVs don't do a great job of maintaining resolution during fast movement on screen (aka screen door effect). The Sony LCD is, in my opinion, the best TV on the market, specifically the XBR2. I have a 46" one and could not be happier. I would recommend a flat panel like the LCD- they take up so much less room and really look great.

Sony anything is almost always a good way to go. personally I believed the rear projection is a good idea. Plasmas still seem to be ahead of their time and have way to many problems. However, LCD is a very nice choice, and I have been blown away by my Sony. Hope I was a help!
