yes. I mean first and foremost, killing a cop or anybody for that matter is wrong. Cops are more important because they are SUPPOSED to be here to protect us. Of course you know you have your dirty cops. I just dont' believe in capital punishment and I don't think God does either. Society came up with that and for what reason I don't think we'll ever know. I mean I think you should get life. I mean yea you will never see the outside again but at least you are living no matter the condition and you get to meet your fellow prisoners and all. I mean you should have thought about the crime before you did it. Nothing is worth killing over.

Why should in NOT be a capital crime? Remember who the people are who are putting their lives out there to protect everyone, regardless of whether they want that protection or not. It is only reasonable that the courts would attach the highest penalty for killing such a protector. I think it is unfortunate that a cop killer can still live a full life... or even up to 20 years on death row.

It's not that a cop's life is worth more, it's more about the severity of a crime.

The logic goes that if someone is willing to kill a police officer, they have such a blatant disregard and disrespect for the law that it makes the crime more severe than just killing a normal civilian.

I know it's shakey logic, but that's the reasoning I've seen politicians and police officers use.

You are wrong. There ya go.

Ok seriously here's the reasoning behind why killing a police officer is a capital crime and killing you would not necessarily be so.

A police officer represents society and is the front line defender against individuals who would break society's law. As that representative they represent much more than just a citizen and any criminal who would act against that representative is more dangerous to society as a whole than someone who may hurt you over an emotional moment.

Are there exceptions? Certainly. Do I think the law has it right? Definitely.

Well, it's shades of grey here. it's not that your life is more important, but how often are you charging at criminals with a gun in your hand. The laws are there to deter those who could easily just kill cops left and right from doing so.

In some states, you get the death penalty for killing anyone.

The same goes for "hate crime" legislation where they want victims who are gay, minority or whatever to have their perpetrators punished more severely then if they hurt you or me.

The thing about cops is this - if a person is willing to hurt a cop (kill a cop) then they are more likely to hurt other people too...it does take a very serious and ugly murderer to do that and yes I'd like to see them get capital punishment.

Here is another way to look at it too - start with capital punishment for cop killers, then hate crime perpetrators and eventually it will be that way for all of them - which is what it should be.

I think that murder in itself should be punishable by death. Killing a police officer is 1st degree murder...hence the possible death sentence.

That law is not stating that one life is more important than another, but that the perpetrator had an even better idea of what they were doing in killing an officer versus a citizen.

And to the answer above me...if I was to have a stray bullet kill a child you would not have to hold me legally responsible...I would be such a wreck I would have to quit my job anyway.

I do agree that when any member of law enforcement walks out of their homes in the morning they have a big bullseye on their backs but that does not mean that they are superior to anyone else. The job they do does involve very high risks but they knew this when they signed up. I do feel that it is ironic that if a cop in involved in a shoot out with a bad guy and one of his stray bullets kills a kid he isn't held legally responsible due to the fact that he fired that shot in the line of duty. In many ways cops are above the law but to be fair I think in many ways they should be but only to a point. They should have the freedom and authority to discharge their duties without having to feel guilty about it but at the same time we as civilians should feel safe from cops especially if we are guilt free. For me it all comes down to the fact that cops are human beings just like the rest of us and when they put that badge on it doesn't magicly make them smarter even though many of them have undergone special training. There is a certain arrogance that surrounds most cops that rubs alot of people the wrong way. I think that is why law enforcement doesn't recieve the respect they feel they deserve. Its all about attitude.

The issue here is the level of contempt required to kill a police officer believe it or not is much higher than killing say, a rival drug dealer.

When you kill someone the line is not drawn at that point. Compare it if you will/can to experimenting with drugs. Smoking pot is no where comparable to injecting heroin on the scale of risk (and stupidity).

A person who would shoot a cop typically has a much higher level of contempt for law and society in general than the criminal who murders an innocent such as me. Because of this higher level of contempt they need to be dealt with more severely.

no cops risk their lives every day for our safety, I think killing a cop should always be capital (though I am against the death penalty) so life in prison without any hope of getting out if the killing was intentional.
