I have trouble getting to sleep. Usually, I'll toss and turn in bed until 1 A.M. When I use to have allergies, I'd take Benadryl and I found it got me drowsy. I need to know - is it okay to take an allergy medicine to get me sleepy?

No. Eventually you'll build a tolerance to it and you'll need a higher and higher does to become drowsy. Additionally, you might build a tolerance to the anti-histamine properities of the drug. Don't do this. Try melatonin to become sleepy with a warm glass of milk or tea. If the insominia proplems persist, talk to your doctor about proper sleeping alternatives.

Benadryl has a drug in it called dyphinhydromine (the exact same thing in Tylenol PM). My suggestion is take melatonin. It is a vitamin that you can purchase over the counter at Wal-mart or GNC or Target. It is 100% NON addictive and workes better than any of the "PM" drugs.

Try it and you will not be disappointed.

If you choose not to then I would suggest using Tylenol PM as opposed to Benadryl since Tylenol PM is dyphinhydromine and acetimephin and does not contain all the allergy meds that your body does not need. If you take Benadryl too often then your body will build up an immuinty to the allergy drugs and if you ever need them then you would be in trouble.

It would be fine for occasional usage. One of the problems that could arise in occasional use however is falling dependency on it. You may always be tempted to take it every time you encounter sleeping problems.Though you may benefit from its sedative side effects and being able to sleep, taking allergy medicines such as Benadryl to make you sleepy is generally not good. Benadryl contains antihistamines which are rarely indicated in the treatment of insomnia, mainly because their benefit-to-side-effect ratio is much worse than that of antidepressants.

Benadryl is the active ingredient in Tylenol PM. Many people take benadryl to help them sleep. I have never heard of benadryl being habit forming. You should not take over 50mg at a time (it usually comes in 25 mg tabs). It's not dangerous to take it as a sleep aid.

No, it isn't. If you need something to get sleepy, talk to your doctor. By using Benadryl, you are building up a tolerance to it, which means when you need it for your allergies, it won't work.

Try something like warm milk. Sounds stupid, but it works. That or a turkey sandwich. Both contain tryptophans which help you relax. Try reading or doing something relaxing. But not tv. TV keeps your brain revved up.

But I'd suggest stop using the Benadryl as a sleep aid.

Many mild tranquilizers and sleeping aids are antihistamines. Take Atarax for example. I see no problem.
