Your tattoo artist didn't recommend one?!? If they did then you should be following their advice. If, for some reason, they didn't then here's what you need to be doing -
-Wash your hands.
-Wash your tattoo.
-Pat it dry and let air dry 5 min or so.
-Rub a THIN layer of Neosporin, A&D, or Aquaphor (what I use) onto your tattoo.
-After 5-10 minutes (when it's had time to soak in) blot off the excess ointment.
-Repeat 3-4x per day for the first 3-4 days.
After 3-4 days, you can start using an unscented lotion a few times a day, or whenever your tat feels dry or itchy.

It will start to flake (like a sunburn) in the first 3-5 days, depending on your skin and how fast it's healing. It will most likely look like a fake tattoo that's coming off. That's the top layer of your skin coming off all at once cuz it was trapped there by the ink. PLEASE don't scratch it! I know it itches... but DON'T! Just put lotion on it and don't pick at it either.

After about a month it'll be fully healed and if you think you need a touch up it will be then (or later) that you get it done. Not before.

Hope that helped.

Tattoo goo is the absolute best stuff out there. It is usually sold at the tattoo parlors and is wonderful. It really brings out the color and stops any itching.

If you can't get that try A&D ointment. It is for diaper rash and works amazingly well. It is also inexpensive and easy to find.

Don't use vasoline or any other ointment that does not let the skin heal. Those are horrible for your tattoo.

When in doubt, call where you had yours done and they should be able to give you some recommendations.

Personally, I like to use A&D ointment. You can get it at any drugstore or even supermarket, usually in the baby aisle. It's cheap, too. And it doesn't go bad for quite a long time so you can use it again and again when you get more tattoos.

I've used a&d but it was ehh. My new arist has me wash it with soap and water 4 times a day (it helps it heal faster because it removes all the build up from creams and keeps the germs out) then I use a non frangence lotion for about 4 days then just let it dry out.

Bag Balm... it's amazing. If you can't get that, A&D ointment will work just fine.

I used Neosporin for three days and then switched to a plain lotion.
