Most states have laws that among other things include martial arts weapons. Some are banned outright like throwing stars or shurikens and balisong knifes. Some martial arts equipment companies don't even handle them anymore for this reason.

Other weapons like kamas, swords, nunchaku, spears, etc., are handled much like guns. If it is in a case in your trunk and you are on your way to class or back home after training then it is not as much of an issue. Especially if you are polite and civil to police if stopped or pulled over and you have a bag of martial arts gear, uniforms and equipment in your trunk along with your weapon. Leaving it in your car all the time or under your seat and getting stopped on a Saturday night after having a beer does not go over as well so use some common sense. The burden of proof is on you and they can cite you and/or confiscate it. You may have to go to court and get the charges dropped. If you have had problems in the past other than something like traffic or parking tickets then you probably have an uphill battle. That's why a little common sense and extra trouble and care on your part can go a long way in helping to avoid all this. On military installations they are even stricter and most of these weapons are banned outright and not allowed at all.

In my state, Massachusetts, any form of 'slung shot' is outlawed. A slung shot is considered to be any flexible or rope like weapon, such as putting a bar of soap or roll of quarters in a sock and belting somebody with it.

When I was still in Pennsyltucky....I believe it was :

nunchaku, balisong knives, switchblades, or any kind of knife that was longer than your palm, any kind of sword in an open-air environment, shuriken/shaken...and I think that's it.

In NC, I'm not really sure....I haven't done any research on it yet.
