When I was in Vietnam I spent a lot of time in the ex pat community, which is full of Europeans, Australians, Americans, Canadians, etc.
I had an awful experience with a French man just SHOUTING, making a really public and unnecessary scene and being very rude to the Vietnamese woman who was just doing her job. Later there was also this British woman being absolutely awful to her driver and then made some comment right in front of him about how ignorant Vietnamese men are.

Surprisingly, I never witnessed a scene like that with an American.

Should I make assumptions that all British and French people are rude and culturally ignorant based off of those interactions?
No. I don't. And you shouldn't either, because it's obvious that you haven't really experienced a variety of American people.

Wow, what a prejudice generalization. I'm American and I don't go around being rude in public. Many of these generalizations in other countries have come form New York City, where the majority of people tend to be rude. They are under high stress, though. Also, before you accuse us of being rude, look at your country and look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, "Am I that much better?" It is quite arrogant of you to condescend to an entire nation. What if I said that I find it entirely unacceptable and rude for other people in other countries to call Americans rude, huh, and that all non-Americans talk down about Americans, huh? See, sweeping unfounded generalizations. In fact, I find your question to be unbelievably rude. Not all Americans are as rude as you think. And have ever been to France? I have found far more French people to be rude, and to a greater degree, than Americans. Americans are not the bottom of the barrel like the rest of the world would like to believe.

Who says we're just rude in public? You? That's rather a rude question in my opinion. Perhaps you are confusing wit and cynicism with being rude. Or maybe you should do some investigation into cultural anthropology and local custom. I quite often find European people appear rude to myself, but it's not necessarily rudeness.

You must first know that americans enjoy being rude in public before you can ask "why."

I am an American. I do not enjoy being rude in public. I sincerely doubt you will find a majority of Americans who DO enjoy being rude in public. Thus your question is moot.

Pardon me, but not all Americans are rude, and if you would be so kind as to not use generalizations on a group of people, I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much, and you have a wonderful day!

Sincerely,

an American

I doubt many Americans realize they are being rude and obnoxious. It comes from not informing ourselves of the different cultures we are surrounded by when we vacation.

For those who do realize and don't care.. its because it asserts some sort of authority or status over others.
I've noticed that some people are very loud when name dropping or talking about how much money they've spent.
It gives the illusion of I'm more important than you.
Its sad, but true.

Freedom of speech, maybe. I actually think they are not aware that they are rude. Some people are just curious, some think they are funny. I do agree that many Americans are rude, they are just brought up different than Europeans.

You see rudeness in every country, yours included I'm sure. So.....stop whining. Maybe find something productive to do instead of getting online and making sweeping generalizations about an entire nation of people, the vast majority of whom you've never even met.

Not all American are rude in public, but those that are are usually people of low self esteem who are trying to make themselves appear more important than they really are. They think they "elevate" themselves by"denigrating" others.
