I do not mean to offend but it seem as MANY Americans are brainwashed with the bible.
I do not inetend to offend, just stating things as I see them
And please do not start saying if you do not like America go back to where you are from, I do not live in the States. I cannot even begin to fathom what kind of hell atheists must go trough there.

once again , who said that I AM AN ATHEIST? JUST BECASUE I DO NOT BELIEVE IN RELIGION,THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME AN ATHEIST.
ALSO there is nothing wrong with being atheist, ATHEIST is lack of belief in any God. That does not mean atheist are bad people, quite the opposite.

You're Swiss? I'm in love.
Americans are so religious because every donation is tax free and the Church makes a lot of money. So, there are churches everywhere you look. The more churches you have, the more churchgoers you have and the more they can shove religion in your face.

The majority of Americans are not that religious - most are 'Christian' in that they've been exposed to that religion, and were accustomed to getting Christmass presents as kids, but don't actually go to Church or use 'God' or 'Jesus Christ' as anything other than swear words. As they get older, many do drift back to Christianity, though.
A minority of them are very religious, and very vocal though, and that's probably what's given you the impression you have.
America has had freedom of religion for over 200 years, and has been undergoing a long liberalization movement for the last half of that time, so religion has faded into the background a bit. It's seen as a personal choice, and a right, not as a driving social force, by most Americans.
Again, there is (and ha always been) a minority of Americans who have gotten whipped up by fundamentalism, and take thier religion into the voting booth and out into the street. They're annoying.

Wow, what a question. I got to put a star on it. People is not brainwashed by The Bible, they are brainwashed by the religious leaders that inflict fear in everyone's minds, but cannot answer simple questions like: why women can't wear pants? or how do you know the resting day is Saturday or Sunday? I believe in God, period. I'm sure everyone will say I'll go to Hell because I'm not baptized or don't go to any specific church. But I believe in God because I've got answers to my prayers. You may call it coincidence (to which I'm not offended at all), but I say those are answers. In the end, I think there's only one God (no matter what name has in every culture) and all be judged the same way. Obviously, God will judge, not the man. Why americans are so religious? Same reason every other culture is religious, they need something to hold on, to give some sense to life.

The majority isn't as religious as you see some (ok, many) of the people on here. The problem is those who are extremely religious are the loudest ones and it makes the rest of the nation look like we're all religious fruitcakes. Atheists handle themselves pretty well... they have the same freedoms (if they didn't, they wouldn't be on here talking about it). I've noticed that most people from other countries view us all that way... it's a shame because in real life, I don't know of many Christians or any other religion that act like the way I see some act in here. Makes me glad I don't have to deal with them on a day to day basis (I'd probably end up in jail).

Many of the Christians here were raised Christians--Christianity is all they know and all they can comprehend.
I'm an atheist living in the states--it can be obnoxious at times, having to deal with people trying to "save" me left and right...but then I remember how much freedom I have compared to these people, and I almost feel a little sorry for them. Almost. :)

The United States of America began with God and thankfully some people still believe in Him. If you don't like the way the country began that's a real sad fact. Asia was founded on many beliefs opposite of Christianity, do you see anyone wondering how the Christians are doing over there with many people who don't believe same as them. Take China for example. In some parts they burn Bibles! Do you see anyone caring about the people who believe in the Bible there?

No, I am not brainwashed at all. I just happen to be in love with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I'm ashamed to say that I don't read the Bible like I should. I guess we're religious because we're intelligent and humble. We know that we are nothing without God.

Americans are not religious per say...most have a belief in God but if they practiced what they preached then there wouldn't be the hostility towards those of other faiths, would there? I think a lot of Americans use there faith, in the pretext of appearing religious as a way to identify the "holier than thou" concept and then practice it accordingly.
No, Americans aren't brainwashed, they are just unlearned about the religion they espouse. All faiths teach peace and tolerance but a person has to believe in that faith in order to actually be peaceful and tolerant.

Sorry, not able to answer your question as I'm not in USA. I am, however, an atheist and we have no problems in the UK (my homeland) or Spain (my chosen land).
Just to clarify:
Fireball - the american Indians were there before the puritans.
Apologia - atheism is not a religion

What's wrong with being religious, if that means having faith in God?
Atheists don't go through any hell here, it's a free country, people do what they want to.
