I am questioning because it seems by the meter that it only has 14g, but Im thinking it has an extra 2 gal not included on the meter. Lets say it is an extra 2 gals after the meter actually reaches the empty level.
I have reached that point many times and the car doesnt seem to have a problem. Am I right or out of my mind???

It seems about right; normally on Volkswagens (I worked with them on/off from 1980 till Dec 05), were always calibrated on the conservative side to allow people additional "safety margin" to get to the nearest fueling station. I cannot remember specifically on your model, however, most VW's built usually had 1 to 1.5 gallons of margain or reserve tank capacity (except for Vanagons/EuroVans, which always had at least 2 gallons reserve), so if its off slightly more, I would not worry about it, though it might be off enough to be covered by warranty if you're still in the warranty period. If it were mine, I wouldn't worry about it. Hope this helps, a car nut.

Fuel guages aren't the most accurate devices, and some don't read linerally. I had one car that if you filled it up it would take FOREVER for the needle to hit 3/4 tank, from but from 3/4 down it went like a cold beer on a hot day.

Ok on my 05 Jetta there is a little nub INSIDE of the tunnel that leads to the gas tank. If you press this nub down with the gas pump nozzle it releases air and allows you to put more gas in. This might be a diesel thing, but one day I was pumping diesel and this guy who previously owned a Jetta showed me this. Before I could not get the full amount of diesel in to raise the gas gauge to full, but this little trick gave me like 2 more gallons of room. It's worth a try!

Fuel gauges are finicky at best and most will read empty long before there is no gas in the tank.

This is known as idiot retardent (so people won't drive until they run out of gas).

read your owners manual, there it will tell you how much gas or how far you can go when the low fuel light comes on. Normally there is a little difference is the readings. My Jeep, when the low fuel light comes on it says i only have about 30 miles to empty but I have gone 50 LOL
