right click on the cell you want to change - then go to format cell - then choose the appropriate date format you want from the list it shows.

All the answers you have been given will work but from the way I interpret your question I believe a better solution than formatting each individual column that has dates in it, you may rather change the default on the computer so when any program encounters a date it is automatically in the exact format you like without going through a bunch of extra steps. To do that follow the steps below.
When you change the default date format to a different format by using this procedure, the display of dates that were previously entered in your workbook will change to the new format as long as the dates haven't been formatted by using the Cells command (Format menu).
1 On the Microsoft Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2 Double click the Regional Settings or Regional Options icon.
3. If XP click the button next to English
4. In the Short date format list, click a format that you prefer.

Go to a date cell. Use the "Format", Cells" commands and highlight date (if not already highlighted. Then select the format you want from the options given. Copy that format to all other cells you want to appear in that format.

you need to format the cell. Right click on the cell and format. From the tap, select date then select how you want the date to appear.

This is the default way Excel handles dates. You can click on the column and the format it to be date with the mm/dd/yyyy option.
