Does the first poster reference to after shave mean the French Foreign Legion don't allow it to be worn at all or just when you go out town off-duty??

It would not be worn while on patrol as the smell would give away your position particularly in the jungles of French Guiana.

They do what they are trained to do, hard and highly proffesional men.

I have some friends who done stints in the legion. Overall they said it was good but hard...and when i mean hard i mean brutality for the sake of it. Some later joined up in the British and Irish defence forces one or two even served in all three organisations!, the general view from them all is that the legion was harder but the defence forces of they're own countries was more professional and the ones that served in all three said that they found the french hardest and the British the most professional and to quote one a former para who served in the legion and the British. "the legion was harder...you were allowed to wear aftershave in the paras"!!!
