I use Limewire and i have asked my friends is it legal and some say it is and some say it isnt.

Limewire is legal, downloading copyrighted material is not. Having Limewire and running it are perfectly legal, but once you download copyrighted material you are breaking the law. Since most content is copyrighted, you could say using it is illegal since most people will be downloading copyrighted material. There is content on Limewire that is not copyrighted, if you use Limewire to get this then you are not breaking any laws.

You must distinguish between the application and the usage of the application.
The Limewire application is a tool that can be used to share data/files and effectively distribute using peer to peer technology.
Now the usage of the application is where legality comes into question. A peer to peer network can contain both legal and illegal content. For example, if I write a freeware application or I'm a musician that wants to distribute, I might seed it into Limewire. In those cases, I'm the content owner and have the right to do that. What is illegal though is when people share content that they don't own the right to. In this case, commercial music and movies are shared illegally as the sharers don't really own the rights to distribute.

I'm pretty sure its legal but I don't know about the music. You see the songs on limewire are displayed on there from another host. Limewire is just displaying it so you can see them. But most of the songs don't have a lisense.

It's illegal to actually download or use anything off it but having the actual program is quite OK but any further than that, it's a no-no as you're downloading songs for free that under law should be paid for.
I suggest you stick with iTunes.

the program itself is legal. sharing and downloading media on it is illegal
