the most important thing is to keep your tattoo out of the sun!!! uv rays are so bad for your skin as well as the ink in your tattoo. be sure to follow your artist's instructions for aftercare, if there is something you aren't clear on ask before you leave the shop. in general you should just take good care of your body, since your tattoo will now be an extension of you, what you do to your body you are doing to your tattoo.
good luck!

Always keep sunscreen on it... I have no tattoos myself, but an ex of mine had a half sleeve. He kept sunscreen on it and it stayed nice and colorful!!
It is always a good idea to have your tattoo artist to draw up something original just for you... it will be more special to you than something you just picked off the wall... Good Luck!

With my two tattoos I used bag balm on them and it worked great. The tattoo artist who did my tattoos recommended using bag balm. You can purchase it at any store in the lotion section of the store. It is a green tin with a cow on it, and it comes in two sizes small and large.

Neo-sporin and don't pick the scabs. Try to avoid direct sunlight on it for the first few days as this will cause it to fade. It may itch a little try not to itch it. I did mine and it ripped the scabs off. Now I have a few spots that you can tell where the scabs were.

I got my nose pierced at a place that is also renowned as a tatoo club [basically linked with others], and they gave me a card and told me to phone them if i had any problems. Anyway it had tatoo advice on the back. It said Savlon cream is good for them. But, I'd check with your tattooist. :]

I have 5 tats, they usually give you a list of instructions to follow at the place you have it done. I just follow them and mine have all healed up well. http://tattoo.about.com/cs/beginners/a/blaftercare.htm this site has detailed instructions, looks similiar to the ones my artist always gives me :)
