They were only subject to the seven universal laws. In addition, according to your own beliefs, Jesus freed you from the law. So why are so many of you preaching the 10 commandments, trying to put them up in schools, courts, and other public places? You were only subject to seven, so why try to enforce and promote three additional commandments that were only meant for Jews?

Matthew 5:17-20
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

These are the words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount. The reason Christians promote the Ten Commandments is usually because of this text (and various others) saying that the Law is not abolished, but rather fulfilled.

Also, the Law is a cut-and-dried list of what is and what is not sin, and people like lists and rules.

Why most Christians who promote the Ten Commandments tend to ignore the other 603 commandments of the Law is beyond me.

I only recently learned about this. I am still striving to understand many of the details.

There were already rules in place for non-Jews (Gentiles) that wished to follow the god of the Jews. These laws (kosher) were already less strict for converts and/or those living outside of Israel.

Similarly, Christians tend to see the strict laws of the Original Testament as being the correct punishment for individuals to give out (mobs and vigilantes) when in truth they are the most extreme punishments that could be given by a court of law (proper trial and judgment).

There are many Christians who are not only trying to 'put them in schools, courts, and other public places' , but they are also trying to keep them in those places where they were before. I think that there are Jews that are trying to keep them there too.

This is why I think that they should do that:
1) Because God likes His word displayed:

Deuteronomy 6
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

You know what? I don't think that most Christians are aware of those verses. I really don't think that Christianity lifts up that verse much at all. Yet you see that they do it. Why? I think that is because God did what He said He would do:

Jeremiah 31:33
"This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

God is just moving people who love Him. He's moving them in the direction He would have them move into. As the children of Israel were moving from the wilderness, so are those who are Christian being moved through their lives full of faith. There really isn't much difference, just location.

2) The other side of the coin is that many Christians are confused about the issues of the Law and Grace. They DO think that they can live by the Law IF they try real hard. To me it's insanity, and admitting to a blind spot. How is it that so many Christians, after admitting to God that they are a sinner, can then think that they can fulfill the Law? Because they listened to a legalist named James. The one who wrote the Epistle of James: the so-called 'Lord's brother'. What modern Christianity has done is attempted to reconcile James with Paul and Jesus. But James had legalism to support his views, and many of todays Christians simply have been taught wrong.

So I see that those who are trying to keep and place the word of God in public places as being spirit filled and making God's word more important than those that seek approval from the public. I also see as many of them a bit confused about the role of the Ten Commandments as in it's purpose in history.

We can go one step further, and just concern ourselves with the two Great Commandments, which fulfill all the rest.

To answer the first question though, they teach the law because they don't know any better. I like the way Paul summed it up, which I will paraphrase:

"Those who desire to be teachers of the law don't know what they are talking about."

Personally I don't think that stuff should be mandated in schools, courts, etc. If the powers that be want to post them that's fine, I don't care. The commandments shouldn't be posted in order to "subject" anyone. I think most people would agree they're good principles to live by in order to live a decent and productive life.

No, Jesus did not free us from the law. He fulfilled the law.

We cannot save nor sanctify ourselves - God does that. We do not get saved by keeping the low, but a part of accepting Him as our Savior we also need to submit to the commandments of God and laws of men.

Seven Noahide Laws.

Muslims can accept them....... and this can become a good base for Jewish-Muslim co-operation and co-existance.

Muslims can accept any Jewish laws that establish pure Monotheism.

They do this because they feel we should be subjected to their beliefs regardless of the ones we hold ourselves....that this country needs them and their religion to survive...but tell me Christians, where was GOD during 9/11? why doesnt he protect our soldiers? hmm??? got no answer??? oh wait...you'll undoubtably say god was punishing us for something...great....so we suffer great losses of life for someone's stupid religion, and their loving god? i say screw that....lets ship all the Christians to a deserted island and party like there is no tomorrow

God's Laws are still right and just.It is that we are not good enough or strong enough to keep them.No one can. That's why we needed a Savior.Someone who could keep them and stand in for us.
They should still be a standard to strive for ,even if it is impossible ,we may come close.

Didn't you just ask this question last week?

Here's the short answer, since I know you're not interested in the long one: gentiles were brought into God's New Covenant, which was promised by God at Jeremiah 31:31-34. I think the word "NEW" explains it all.

EDIT: Meshugga42, I agree with you. That's why we follow the NEW Covenant, brought by Messiah.
