the dog was killed by my car and it did considerable damage £1000 approx. it was reported to the police by myself but the only logged the call. the family who owned the dog were very upset at the scene as was my 5 year old daughter who was in my car so i returned to their house the day after to discuss the damage to my car and the denied the owned the dog.

This happens all the time especially with dog bites or animal cruelty cases. You just have to prove it. People are innocent until proven guilty. Hopefully you can tell your insurance company what happened and they will go after the people.

I take it that you have reported the Accident to the Police as the Law states? You will have to tell them who you believe the owner of the dog to be and then it will be up to them. They should have the means to scan for a Microchip etc.
The alleged owner would appear to have no insurance cover for the dog (a lesson for us all!) so your insurance company should take this up

It is up to your insurance company to go after them, If the dog was registered with a local vet in their name then thats just one way of getting them. I would definately make the police aware of the situaltion just to make sure you have done everything correctly.
Its the job of the Insurance to recover your losses so I wouldnt worry too much.

Your insurance should cover damage, is the dog dead because you hit it? Should be a police report. Sue the owner in small claims court for your deductible. Surely there are plenty of witnesses that the dog was his even if he didn't register it. If he killed the dog to avoid dealing with you, report him to animal control!

You need to go through your insurance and the police. They can find out what the facts are.

How much damage could a dog do to the outside of a car, how long ago did the damage occur...and why is the dog now deceased?
