According to Ruben Navarrette Jr., columnist from the Washington Post Writers Group, because we cannot live without our gardeners and maids to keep up appearences, we "welcome" illegal immigration and thus continue the hypocracy. Hazelton is an old has-been coal mining town, I would know, I leave near it. The only reason why these illegals are migrating there is because its cheap. End of story. And trust me, Hazelton is not the only town with this problem in cen. PA...its just the only one that has a set to do anything about it! What complete rubish!! Is he blind?

When we refuse to enforce our borders and immigration system, we invite people to come here illegally. Some come to do evil and harm us. Most come to make a better living and many settle here and integrate. They would make fine candidates for naturalization, if our system wasn't so underfunded and under enforced. We shouldn't punish these people due to our negligence.

The problem is enforcing existing laws against the criminal element. States are stepping up to the plate. Local govts should keep pushing.

I'm no bleeding heart liberal. Maybe I'm a bit naive on the problems illegals cause in towns like Hazelton, PA. But we've enabled the good and the bad to come here, for their own selfish reasons. Doesn't the same motivate us?

I hate to tell ya, but I think he's right. Here's the thing: Illegal immigration lowers the wage scale for everyone, not just for those people themselves. Therefore, illegal immigration is welcomed by powerful business interests because it makes their labor cost lower. Since illegals are afraid to speak up, they're also less likely to unionize or vote, which is also to the benefit of the rich and powerful. The powers that be want it to LOOK like they're doing something about illegals, but they're not really serious. The proposed fence, for example: You know very well that within a few years, the fence would have holes in it or otherwise be ineffective. When the first amnesty was proposed back during the Reagan years, they promised tougher enforcement. Did that happen? Of course not. Who suffers? Working class people. It's a complicated issue, but the best course, in my mind, is to make conditions and pay better for workers.

Ruben Navarette Jr.,probably has illegals cleaning his toilet and mowing his lawn.

Just because illegals were overlooked in the past, doesn't make it ok now. It's still against the law. They are a bigger problem now since there are millions and millions more of them than in the 80s. I'd never hire an illegal alien for anything. My legal immigrant father mowed the lawn to make ends meet. There are still Americans and legal residents who will do those jobs. Illegals are easily replaceable. The only people who benefit from the illegals are the big business owners. The average American has been paying the price. We cannot take it anymore.

The law in 1986 outlawed communities from enacting their own immigration laws that do not comply with the federal law, Hazelton lost the first round in court . The real legal test will be on January 1,2008, when the Arizona employers sanction law will come into effect , it will be decided in the courts, this case will be different, because its a State Rights case.
No Ruben is not Blind.

in basic terms ask the 24 plus % that improve into violent criminals. those violent criminals are quite constructive to the U. S. economic gadget. Prisons make money from filling their cells and my do they fill them up with latinos. everywhere from 25 - 50 % are latino in a given detention center. The elite kinfolk dynasties (i.e. Rockefellers, Morgans, Rothschild) who use government to break their opposition, like issues like unlawful immigration because of the fact it helps to diminish wages. which might clarify why the federal government would not choose to guard the borders and makes existence better than delicate for unlawful aliens in the U. S.. it is not considerable how lots debt is amassed by using unlawful aliens, because of the fact the federal government alongside with the IRS can push that debt onto the midsection type as taxes, and subsequently destroying their opposition which grew to become into before common because of the fact the midsection type.

The US has historically ruined the economies of many countries, especially in Latin America. We have even supported murderous dictators over democratically elected Presidents. We've stolen lands from Mexico and then blamed the Mexicans for it! We then wonder "Why do THEY hate us?", when "they" is most of the world. Get a clue, our govt. is responsible for the mess in Latin America, and now the Middle East....You think for a second we became a world power by being nice or generous? NOT!

If there were no jobs here for illegals they wouldn't come. How many companies have you heard of being penalized for hiring illegals? Now compare that number to how many illegals there are in this country. It is total hypocrisy.

I think your premise that it is cheaper to live in PA than in Mexico is incorrect. Immigrants come here, as they almost alwys have, to earn money. I'd agree with Navarette, thatas long as people in the USA are willing to pay immigrants substantially more than they make in their own country, they will find a way to come here.
