If your green card is expired and you need to travel in December 2007. What can be done or is there an alternative?

You must apply for a new card by filing an I-90; that will take several months, so do it right away.

If you leave the US with an expired card, DHS might not admit you, and the airline will not board you. You can go to the nearest US embassy or consulate and ask for a boarding letter, but they might refuse to give you one.

If you go to INS to renew you expired card, they can probably issue a temporary replacement. Check their website for more info.

It is best to talk to the immigration office closest to you. Or you can talk to people who have/ had the same problem as you.

You can try to get a passport but that might take several months to get.
