I've been using a 9 iron for years and it does the job perfectally for me, and when I was getting lesson with my college (sports course) the instructor recommended a 9 iron too. Hope it helps.

There is no right answer as it is totally individualistic. Depends on the length you need to pitch and the length you hit specific clubs.
If it were a single club you were looking for a Pitching wedge would probably be best. Adding a sand wedge or 7 iron depending on the factors mentioned above could help.
The real important thing is to enjoy it whatever clubs you choose to use.

In general, the clubs you use for Pitching and Chipping are "Wedges".
For chipping, the PW (Pitching Wedge) is the the most common. This is for chips 10 yards away from the green at most. Chipping is an extension of putting--let the club do the work.
For pitching, it depends on a couple variables:
How far are you?
How's your lie? (is it fluffy, burried, down slope, etc)
How much green do you have to work with?
These are all questions you need to ask in order to determine the right lofted club for your pitch. Sometimes it's your LW, othertimes it may be your PW.

I use a 7 or 8 iron for a failry short run. If I need a long run, I use a 5 iron.
