How about something like this: http://www.ashleyfurniture.com/Showroom/Item_Popup.aspx?sItemSku=T233-0&sSelectedItem=T233-0
Don't try to make the place look to girly, instead go for a more sophisticated modern look you both will appreciate. A really nice throw always softens a leather couch. The kitchen set like this would really bring the rooms together: http://www.ashleyfurniture.com/Showroom/Item_Popup.aspx?sItemSku=D233-15&sSelectedItem=D233-15
I got this idea from another Yahoo user and I thought the look was incredible. Hope you like it too.

Black leather is going to command a "handsome" look, not a feminine or pretty look.
Modern or contemporary is the best way to go, but you could go traditional library look, like deep reds and dark wood tables, etc.
If you go modern, glass tables.
Accessorize with deep red throw pillows. Beiges can also work in accessories.
The feminine touch that will look wonderful there will be fresh flowers on the coffee table or side table, mixed colored artwork, and other deep warm colors in things like a throw rug under a coffee table if the floors are wood. Stay away from pastels and cool colors.
Also a dried flower vase would work on some corner table or fireplace mantle.
Choice of lamps and shades also will make the room feel traditional instead of just a bachelor pad. I have a lamp with tassles on the bottom of the shade, looks great.
My living room is 'handsome' as compared to 'feminine', and I love it. My couch is a deep red natuzzi.
Buy a quality leather couch, or don't buy leather...cheap leather is worse than no leather at all. Those leather couches that the head rests lift up is a sure sign of a cheap leather couch. No wide arm rests either, they're long out of style.

Leather couches can be difficult to decorate around, but don't let it intimidate you. Black or brown leather is a neutral, so you can go with any color palette you choose.

In my living room I have a brown leather couch and two club chairs. I have added some visual interest with an area rug with an abstract pattern of browns and art that also adds color. On my windows I've added drapes to also make the room look softer and some pillar candles on the mantle.

Test out one of your existing pillows first on your new couch to see if a pillow will even work on it. Leather, unlike fabric, doesn't look so great with pillows (imo). I bought some really fancy silk pillows for my leather couches, and though they look great in the room they just don't fit well with the couch so I finally ended up giving them to Goodwill.

Look at furniture stores online by searching for leather furniture and see how those decorators have designed the room. That should give you plenty of ideas to soften the look of a leather room so it doesn't look like a bachelor pad.

I would go with a fabric chair with a print that has floral and contains black.

Also rich mahogony and flowers on the table
Black and White photos of your family / old photos on the walls.

Here are some coordinating ideas

or choose a toile - they always have black

this really is a lot you can do - you can soften with soft blues / light greens or you can make more dramatic by using the fabric i posted a picture of. If you use that fabric and you are more traditional than try some antique furntiure.

good luck!
*** edit - I love the picture of the slate and black table - that would look lovely with some light blue fabric coordinating pillows - go with something in a print - start with the curtains though...

Get a nice soft comfy throw in a neutral color to "soften" the look of the leather.. Also, no matter how hard your bf begs don't let him get mirrors on the walls... Sooo tacky... You can also soften the look of leather my accenting the room with wood furnature. Like end tables and a coffee table a wrought iron may be too masculine.. Maybe a round coffee table would be a soft touch or round glass top... Maybe a nice soft chair/ottoman would be nice to "soften" the look... I like bright colors so with a black sofa the sky is the limit... Good luck...

since you said sofas (plural) I'm not sure what other furniture you are talking about. Go for light tan side tables and coffee table and turquoise blue is a great color that goes with black, that I think adds a feminine touch.

My sister married a white dude and we all love him, he's one of the family, so we not all like that. I honestly don't care as long as the black woman I see a white dude with ain't my wife, lol. There's a lot of self-segregation in the black community and an intolerance to outsiders. It's stupid, but to a lot of black men, a black man with a white woman is viewed as a sort of justice: something he's taken from "the man", while a white guy with a black woman is seen as a hostile intrusion into the black community. Sorry to say, but the black community struggles with progress too. The idea of "color-blindness" is something many black people expect of other races, but feel no obligation to live up to themselves.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
