sprinfield makes great 1911's but watch out I've some of the GI models being built in the philipenes and they were very rough, also the pinned front sight means you cant change the sights, in a 1911 I'd look for something with a dovetail on the front sight after all the fun of 1911's is the all the custom stuff you can get for them. for budget 1911's did you look at Para-Ordnance?
I know a number of people the own taurus products (I personaly dont care for the company) they all pretty much have the same opinion, when you buy a taurus you flip a coin, it could be a good one or it could be garbage, I know of 2 individuals both owning 2 of the same guns, one has been flawless one has been notheing but problems , until taurus gets their quality control under control I dont want anything to do with them.
the xd is a solid weapon and has a good following, I've never played the .45 (if you'd asked about the 9mm or .40 I'd have a little more help for you) so dont have much to say about it. The P90s Ive shot and looked at were loose felt cheap and did not group well compared to the sig p220 and 1911s that I'm used to, however they never had any failures.
the 1911's give you more options, the xd is a better design for most people as a defensive or carry weapon(although the carry concept is similar to a 1911's ****** and locked) and the ruger is a decent gun but they really dont impress me personally but some people like them, the sa/da trigger dosnt make for a great defense weapon though.

I have carried an XD subcompact 9 for nearly a year. I have well over a 1000 rds through it without a single malfunction with a wide variety of ammo. The trigger is much better than the Kel and my subcompact has the nice choice of a 13 rd or 16 rd magazine. I would recommend to anyone considering buying a new handgun to consider the XDs. I liked my 9 so much that I bought he XD .45 ACP Service. What a hammer.

The only thing your pistols have in common is the caliber, .45 acp. What are your needs? Strickly target shooting? Then go with one of 1911 clones that best fits your budget.
Personal/home defense? Consider one of the double-actions again, according to your budget. I kind of liked the Springfield XD 4 Inch Bi-Tone Service Model .45 ACP, but the Springfield GI .45 1911-A1 Stainless is a right handsome gun and the price is most reasonable.
Which one is right for you? Only you can decide.
Good luck.

Depends on how you will use it, for carry purposes I would go with either of the Rugers, otherwise I would personally spring for one of the Springfield 1911s. The XD is a great pistol, but if I went the polymer route I would get the Ruger.
Niko has a good point about the Taurus, I've heard widely ranging reports about their semi-auto's.
r3d has a great point, save and spring for the Kimber.

If you want a 1911 .45, I would spend the extra cash and get a Kimber. That is what I did and I have yet to regret that decision.
That being said, I would go with the XD. If you're going to carry, it is much lighter and easier on your back/hip/shoulder depending on how you will carry it.
