My husband and I are going out on Friday to a nice restaurant. I noticed that they have braised rabbit on the menu. My husband likes buffalo and lamb, but those are both a little gamey for me. I do like duck and venison though. Would you say that rabbit is comparable to any of those? I'm really curious, but not enough to blow good money on something we won't eat.

Rabbit is very tasty when it is prepared properly. Being that it is offered at a restaurant, I'd say they have the recipe down pat. Rabbit, even from the wild, is not very gamey. Of the 4 animals you listed above, rabbit is the least gamey of all. If I had my choices of buffalo, lamb, venison, duck, and rabbit, I would put them in the following order of preference:
Venison
Rabbit
Buffalo
Lamb
Duck

Hope that helps.

CHICKEN

Kill the wabbit!

The verdict is in: People are willing to eat the Easter Bunny – that is, rabbit meat in the form of cutlets and “Italian” style sausage. On the other hand, most who like the taste and texture of rabbit meat are not as enthused about its higher cost.

Ethnic groceries in cities like New York and San Francisco often carry imported rabbit at hamburger prices, but Carr says this inferior meat from China, Brazil and the rest of South America only hurts the reputation of all rabbit. Why does American rabbit taste better and cost more? Quality feed, Carr says. Foreign rabbits eat grass. Finally, demand for rabbit rises at the ebb of supply, making availability inconsistent. Rabbits flourish and reproduce in the summer, but most people have pigeonholed rabbit as a winter dish.

I raise rabbits and hunt rabbits. Both raised and wild rabbit taste like chicken.

Like mentioned above, unless it is served on the bone, you can't tell the diference between long ears and yard bird.

Restaurant rabbit - farmed - will taste like white meat and wild rabbit will be more like dark meat.

I don't know where you're getting your info, but there is no contradiction about whether rabbit need hay. They only people who don't feed their rabbits hay are those breeding for meat, who don't care if they're healthy because they slaughter them quite young, which is awful. Rabbits absolutely, 100 percent need hay. If your rabbit isn't eating hay he is likely overweight - which is dangerous for Flemmies because they're at risk for bone disease - and he is certainly at severe risk of a number of health issues. This isn't a debatable topic. If he's not eating the hay you're giving him, he's just a picky rabbit and there are dozens of different grass hays you can try - timothy, orchard, meadow, oat, etc. Most rabbits won't eat every type. But it's your job as his owner to make sure his diet is appropriate - you can't be surprised he's having digestive issues when he's not getting nearly enough fiber.

To me, (my opinion) the rabbits they serve in restaurants do NOT taste gamey...they are more like a mild poultry flavor.....the rabbits they serve in restaurants are 'tame rabbits' raised in a controlled habitat and feed a different diet than wild rabbits would eat....though I do like wild rabbit as well.....don't worry I think you will really enjoy it... and just for some more information....squirrel is wonderful too.....like both in the restaurants and wild, especially the wild has a nice 'nutty' flavor to the meat...

i had rabbit a looooong time ago, and I really liked it. From what I remember it tasted similar to venison.(it could have even just been the way it was prepared) But i think you will be safe if you try it.

I'm not sure I would order rabbit if I've not had it before (and I haven't). The psychological aspect of it, for me, would factor into play. I'd stick to something that I know I'd like and save the rabbit meal for another time. But, that's just me.

If you like duck you will like rabbit, which is comparable to chicken.
If you are going to a restaurant the chances are that it will be so well seasoned or sauced you will not even notice what it is like.
