I heard getting your name removed from the records is such a pain (have to write a letter, confirm with the bishop, etc.) that most apostates never bother.

So apostates or simply passively disinterested people remain on the church records and makes LDS church membership look much bigger than it is.

In our family, this has been the case. The LDS church has refused to remove names from their member list. My husband's family have not been practicing Mormons for 35 years, the church will not take their names after repeated and persistent requests. I believe it's because they can tell their own that they're bigger than they are.

First, it's really not that hard to remove your name from the church records. People are consistently coming and going. Second, I don't know many adults that want to be removed, there might be a few kids that are only there for their parents, but that is true with any church. Maybe there are a few members that want to leave and don't, but that is not because it is to hard to leave, it is probably because they are not sure they want too. It is really just like any other church. If for some reason a church will not remove their names, it is probably because that specific church wants to look like it has a higher attendence rate at that specific church, not the entire LDS church membership. Around where I live at least, this is not an issue. Can you tell me though, that this isn't an issue in other churches as well?

It just takes asking for it to be removed. However, very few actually want their names removed because as long as they are members, they are entitled to all the benefits that come with membership, such as the welfare program (free food and bills paid in dire times of need.)

What's your point? What percentage of Catholics don't follow Catholisism? How many Baptists only go to church on Christmas and Easter? What really, does it matter? Trying to bring someone else down to your level is fruitless. If you believe in some religion then talk about why you're right, not why everyone else is wrong.

I don't know about your case, but I have only seen bishops help with the process, not block it. I think they just want to make sure that people understand what blessings they are cancelling.

I am LDS and there is nothing in the WORLD that would make me want to leave the church! I love what it stands for and the people in it! If you are thinking about leaving the church, I would think again, and then DON'T quit the church.

I would suggest making a video involving desecrating a book of mormon. According to a buddy of mine (as we apostates of all stripes tend to hang together), this expedites the excommunication process.
