My boyfriend and I will have been together for 2 years in November and I care about him a lot, but he hates that I smoke cigarettes. I quit for about 6 months, but work and other things got me stressed out and I started smoking again. He really wants me to quit, but when he first met me and we started dating I smoked all the time. Don't know what I should do.

Unless you truly want to quit for yourself, it won't work if you try. And if he keeps on your back about it, it won't help the situation. Suggest a compromise. Try not to smoke as much around him. I don't know if you live together or live separately, but when you're together, if you need a cigarette, smoke outside. At other times, try to resist a little more. Explain to him that you have to quit on your own time, that it's something hard to do and to have patience. And perhaps you could schedule an appointment with a doctor to talk about the options for quitting.

Do something other than smoke. If you have the sudden urge to smoke, put a gun in your mouth, eat some food, do something with your mouth that would prevent you from smoking. Think about your health and your boyfriend. It's not exactly fun to kiss someone that smokes, honestly.

Granted it would be better for health reasons, but if the only reason you are thinking of quitting is for your significant other then I am afraid you aren't ready. You need to determine if this is something you want to do for you and your health. If that is the overwhelming reason to quit then by all means quit. I don't think it is good for anyone but you must be ready to quit. Best of luck to you. You can do it when you are ready to.
