As a paramedic you should be able to find a decent paying job easily. For living try Brooklyn's Ocean Parkway or Queen's Rego Park. Those neighborhoods are not overly expensive yet nice enough to live.

It could be a difficult process, but it doesn't have to be. It just depends on how picky you want to be. I moved to the city about a year ago with about $3,000, no job, an apartment I found on craigslist, and the two bags they let me carry on the plane. The first couple months were a bit crazy living in what turned out to be a bad neighborhood and trying to find work, but I wouldn't call the process difficult. Work came pretty easily and you learn how to navigate the city real fast. Naturally, everything is more expensive but you just have to learn to budget your money and not eat out all the time. Then once I got accusomed to the city and saved up a little money, I found a new apartment. Looking back on it, it was really an easy process. Not everything went how I wanted it to, but I was surprised how accessible this city is to new people. Just remember that is a fast paced city, so if you want things done you have to be proactive and assertive. Now if you want advice on afforable housing and decent neighborhoods, that is a whole different question all together. Best of luck!

It is all about budgeting, please remember not only is housing more expensive but most likely food and every day ammenities are as well. Just make sure you plan and budget correctly to avoid slipping in to debt. Best of luck.
