Australia is a big country, much bigger than Europe, and has places and lifestyles to suit everyone. If you want a big cosmopolitan city with natural beauty and everything imaginable, you can't go past Sydney. Melbourne is much the same without the natural beauty. The other capital cities are much smaller but delightful in their own way. Perth is a long way from anywhere else.
Where you go depends on what you like doing. Read about Australia before you come and pick somewhere to start. You can always move later.

It really depends on what you look for in a place to live. What is most important to you? The only piece of info you have given us is that you are French. Based on that, I recommend the town of Esperance in WA, because it was named after a French ship. It also has the whitest beach in Australia. Of course, it is also fairly remote, but you can't have everything, can you?

depending in what city people live they will give you a different opinion. its big country. it really depends on what life style you want. having traveled around Australia for a while if you have to live in capital city go to Perth, its very nice and the weather is great. other wise I really like the mid north coast of nsw, it doesn't get really cold or really hot, it has great beaches and there a many different places to choose from depending on what you do for a profession. good luck with it mate. google images some of the places of interest to you and go from there.

Im not sure how tentofield can say that Melbourne has no natural beauty??? We have a river running through the city with parks and gardens on either side.
Melbourne is way more cosmopolitan that Sydney, which is why they say we have a "Cafe culture"
Melbourne is friendlier than Sydney too.
