I highly recommend looking up the word parable before you go and post your next dumb question about Noah having martians on his boat or asking whether their was a mars bar tree in the garden of eden or asking whether god made starbucks on the 17th day.

lol.. that was a good one... mars bar tree in the garden of Eden... haha.. you are good at parables!

So now.. right I look it up.. it's a little dicktionary .. but I am not complaining ... "A parable is a brief, succinct story, in prose or verse, that illustrates a moral or religious lesson".... Now I am none too certain about hte use of the word "story" but I kind of have a gut instinct that it sort of infers "fiction". None the less......

So now I am looking at your question ..... the lesson you are teaching (feel free to interupt at any time) is.. (feel free.. I say) . . oh.. wait. I don't get it.

Hmmm,
I thought you were being really clever and offering something fresh... let me think... a parabel about mars bars, noah, martians, the whitty starbucks comment...

Nope. You got me.

Now you see, that's the thing about parables, these modern day evangelists have done them to death.. so that they are just so ... {{boring}} in the way that they deliver a message.. to the point where well meaning people, such as yourself.... just dont make any sense. So my response is... doesn't anybody say what they mean when it comes to religios teaching? or do we always have to hear another .. parable? Struth.. the one's in teh bible could do with some red=bull don't you think?

I'm not sure where you live but in the U.S. there are huge numbers of people who believe every word of the Bible literally. Its a problem. We have huge Christianity cults that might look very foreign to what you know as Christianity. In fact if you happen to be Catholic these people think you are not Christian and going to hell.

I think frustrated people try to get them to look at the fallacy of the belief by pointing out how absurd it is and that evidence doesn't back it up. Its not so much that people can't have personal beliefs, its that these people are trying to influence politics and school curriculum to reflect these beliefs. They also believe the world will end soon, not only do many believe this but they actually WANT it to happen and would like to see it happen. Thats a little frightening, don't you think?

you understand that if you want me to call it a parable I will use it to crush your whole beliefs that the bible is "literal" truth

After all if its a parable then how do we know the story about say jesus isn't just a parable? Or that of moses or even genesis

How do you know that the whole thing isn't just one long *** parable. Or do you have some sticky notes that I missed?

Parable of the Sower. The seed is the "word of God." Only problem there is that no one know what Jesus was talking about. He certainly was not passing out Bibles.... and I don't think he was passing out old testament scrolls either.

A whole chapter on this in Gospel Enigma...14

I don't need to look up the word parable. I know what it means.

Do you know what "hyperbole" is? Because often, the "dumb" questions about things like the flood story are just that: hyperbolic silliness to point out the ludicrous nature of the story that so many Biblical literalists take as historical truth.

And perhaps you should take a look at some of the other people who post here and take into account just how many people take the bible LITERALLY....

Just because you might see it as parable or metaphor doesn't mean all of them do. It just means you're closer to realising that it is misinterpretation and nonsense than they are.

Well, maybe you should tell that to the fundamentalist groups that believe the bible is the literal translation of god (including the part where Yahweh advocates selling daughters into sexual slavery or stoning to death for adultery).

I also think the book is a lousy source for parables.

It is refreshing to see someone who interprets the story of Noah as a parable.
And if on one side you see a couple smart-alecs who are going to bicker about boat capacity and maintenance, don't forget those on the other side who see Noah's ark as something to be understood literally.

A short moral story (often with animal characters) [syn: fable]

FABLE! A story not founded on fact, like the rest of the cult teachings. Nothing but fairy tales and boogey man stories to keep scared children amused, in line and obeying commands!

Well at least you admit that you don't believe in the literal meaning of the Bible. We all know that they are parables.

By the way, a parable is a FICTITIOUS narrative.
