I have 2 birds I brought to my home in MA from VT. I also have 2 birds of my own, and am currently babysitting the VT birds while my parents are gone. They all seem to get along GREAT! Play together, eat together, groom each other, etc. But the last few days I noticed that one of the VT birds (the only female out of the 4) climbs in her food dish and kicks her food out behind her. I am not sure what's going on - they all get along great during the day! Any help would be appreciated!

PS: She is almost 9, and we have provided a nest for her before, but she had no idea what to do with it. I can try adding one - that's really helpful!
But I have not noticed her sitting in the dish - she will just kick all the food out, and then climb out and let it sit empty. At least that's how I found it the last 2 days after coming home from work.

I have no idea yet how to reply to people who post answers - but they are all budgies - Kiwi, the girl is like I said almost 9; Fabio, her companion, is about 4 now. And my other 2 boys, Nico and Doc, are about a year old now. They do all have seperate cages, but when I get home I let them all out and they hang out together - in each other's cages, on top of them, on the coffe/dining table, couch, floor - wherever they can find space!
I really appreciate all the feedback!

It could be a number of things. We have birds that will throw food out of the dish when they don't like the food. Others throw food for the fun of it, or it could be she likes the bowl as a nesting place. If she is eating the food alright it isn't the first thing, which means she is either playing or nesting in the food dish. These are not bad things, aside from the fact it wastes a little food. If she doesn't seem to like the food, try finding a store that carries a food called Higgins Small Fruit and Veggie. This food is a favorite for our Budgies, and they love it more than any other food we have tried to date. It is a well balanced diet and worth finding a place that sells it.

I would tend to agree with some of the previous answers. If she is not looking for a nest, then she is probably bored.
Does she have toys in the cage? how many? when was the last time you gave her new toys? Birds get bored very easily, so you need to give them a running supply of new toys to keep them occupied. Sometimes it is sufficient to just change the positions of the toys. Also old toys do not have to be thrown away. Take out old toys and store them, They can be reintroduced in 6 months or a year.
She might also be looking for something special in the food. Sometimes a bird will kick out everything in the dish except its favorite food, like sunflower seeds.
And lastly, she may just be one of those birds who likes to kick out seeds. It seems to be a great game for them with rules of:
Step one- approach the bowl
Step two- kick out all the food
Step three -Squawk for more food
Step four - Look innocent

There could be many reasons for this behavior, but it does not seem to be a serious problem.
As I suggest to all who have questions, you might benefit greatly from joining a Yahoo group for bird lovers. They can be a great help, providing help and experience from other bird owners. E-mail me if you would like me to recommend a good group.

Well im thinking they don't have a lot of toys to play with so they do lil things which may anow us for entertaiment. My parakeet use to do teh same thing because that time i jus got it and didn't buy it any toys, but after a while ever when i got it toys i t became a habit for the bird. So i went out n bought a new food bowl which looks like a powl and u attach to teh side of the cage, this alows a small amount of food to be send out so no waste.

Move the food dish & place perhaps a nest box where the dish is currently. It sounds like nesting behaviour. But if you don't want breeding then just move the food dish away to another spot & don't put in any nest boxes, seperate males/females.

Continue moving the food dish if she keeps sitting in it, she will eventually give up but you need to be persistant.

BTW, what birds are they? You didn't mention this.

She does sound like she's trying to nest. That's common this time of year. Get a smaller food dish or two if needed, so she can't get into the dish.

Birds are so very smart. Smarter than we humans give them credit for.

What a cutie!

Most of the time we don't know what our birds are doing or why-:)) My guess is either this bird is playing for sake of entertainment, or doesn't like what's in the food dish.
Be sure and watch closely to ensure he/she is eating enough!

If you are certain she is actually eating enough food daily, then don't worry about it, just clean up the mess when she is finished.LOL

It sounds like a normal foraging technique. She may be looking for a particular kind of food in that bowl.

If she's kicking the food out and then settling in, that's something different.

Any chance she needs a nest box?

sounds as if she really doesn't want what she sees in that food bowl and is hoping what she wants is in there somewhere at the bottom
