Hi, i want to buy a plasma/LCD tv of 42 inches size. please tell me what resolution I should go for to get a good HDTV pleasure.
Is philips a good brand to buy?

Philips is a good brand. They use LG panels in their displays. As a general rule, the more pixels the better. 1080 is better than 720 (768), but only if the input is high def. All 1080 screens struggle to produce a decent picture when fed low res data, 720 less so. So if you plan on watching a lot of standard def TV, I'd opt for 768. However if you will be watching 'blue ray' movies and high def TV, go for 1080.

A big question is how close you will be to the TV when you're viewing it. The closer you get, the more important high resolution is. (If you're far enough away, your eye can't resolve the higher resolution).

So if you have a small room/big TV, then go for the highest resolution. If you're always 15+ feet away a 720p set is probably fine.
