Hi, i am so so so scared of the dentist and fillings but despite that i still go every 6 months and keep good care of my teeth. i have never had a cavity before i was 16 -last year i got my first surface small filling done. after that i kept even better care of my teeth as to avoid any more fillings...
but an x ray showed a small bit of decay between my back tooth and the one next to it!!
my dentist said its very small and easy to fix and wont neccesarily get bigger just yet as its early and he couldnt see anything on probing. I am soooo scared though - how do they fill in between teeth? if its small will they still drill lots away?

and also- i am going on holiday on sat. and may have an opputunity to do it on the friday before we go- is that a wise idea or do these sorts of fillings usully hurt and take time to settle???

sorry for the ramble but i am terrified of the dentist!

First and foremost .....RELAX!!!...Fillings are normal run-of-the-mill procedure. It sounds like the cavity is very small and may not even require Novocaine, but probably just to keep you comfortable take it anyway. It will have no impact on your holiday on Saturday, go ahead, get it done and over with and then you can relax while on holiday and not have to think about it afterwards. Filling, usually large ones or ones close to the gumline can be sensitive to cold for approx. 2 weeks but as time passes they usually get less and less sensitive, yours is neither of these. The only reason I mention that is because you could have a minor amount of sensitivity, but that too will dissipate over time.

When you get cavities inbetween you teeth it's a big red light going off saying " I DON'T FLOSS!" It's just like filling the other tooth, but this time they may have to get you numb. YES, that does mean a shot. If you are 16- you are a big girl now and you should act like one. No fussing around in the chair- it makes our job 10 times harder.
The only thing that's different from an occlusal (top of the tooth) filling is that they will place a thin metal band around the tooth hold the filling in place.
They may drill lots anyway. Cavities can be bigger than shown on x ray. --But you'll be numb and won't feel anything.
Do the filling. Go on vacation. have a good time. If you wait, you'll be worried the whole time about going back to do it.

Drilling will only be done on the tooth that's showing decay. The dentist will never drill more than just the decay. A thin plastic divider is slipped between the two teeth when the cavity is filled..
Do it on Friday if you like, It sounds like a simple procedure with no complications.

They drill as much as necessary so the filling can hold. With the new fillings and techniques it should be very little drilling
The important thing is you should not delay because it will eventualy get worse and than it will take more extensive drilling. It dosen't hurt since you will be given anesthetics and after a couple of hours the filling will settle and you can continue to do everything normaly.

Dentist and the gynecologist are the two most dreaded places to go. but if you are really nervous the dentist can give you nitrous oxide to relax you. I know how you feel my husband is the biggest baby when it comes to the dentist he has to take a Valium and also have nitrous oxide along with the Novocaine.
