depends what size you are after, if over 37" then you have a choice.
Then it depends on what you watch, if sports, gaming and any fast moving films then plasma.
If not then lcd

I have always been an LCD person, mainly becuase the first plasma screens only lasted for 5 years or so and were very expensive, after this time the picture began to decrease in size. Now however the plasma screens last for a lot longer and come in bigger sizes.
The tv normally comes with a tag saying how many hours it should last. Ask a store assistant their opinion too- they are normally valid in reputable stores e.g. John Lewis, Currys, Comet etc.
I personally prefer LCD technology as I find it more reliable and often tvs are bright and brilliant. I would agree that the sony bravia 42" is an awesome tv, probably the best value on the market although expensive, but expect to pay at least 2 or 3 grand for it!!!
It really depends on the size tv you want, I would say if you want anything up to 40-50" get LCD, anything above get plasma (you probably wont find any LCD much bigger anyway!)
Good makes are LG, Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, (B&O!), Sharp. Dont buy a TV that you dont recognise the manufacturer of...
Hope that helps!

Pick up the August copy of "What Hi-Fi and Home Cinema" magazine. In it, you'll find an expert review of 8 brand new 37" televisions. The one that came out best was a plasma - the losers were all LCDs.
The truth is, people actually prefer plasma to LCD. Check out the link below for the real story.
(By the way, do you have to manually pump oil into your car engine? No? And by the same token, plasma screens don't go dim or lose their gas, either. It's something called progress...).

Each technology has advantages and disadvantages. Plasma has deeper blacks, more accurate color and faster response to rapidly-changing pictures and is better for optimized viewing (such as a movie room), especially at screen sizes above 40 inches; LCD is lighter, less fragile, more energy efficient, can provide a brighter picture and is better for bright rooms and much other non-critical viewing.
There are only a few sizes (40-50 inches or so) where the two technologies overlap, so size is your first consideration.
A good reference comparison chart can be found at the link below.

I work for a large TV manufacturer in the UK - over the last 12 months LCD technology has improved so much that as far as my company is concerned LCD is the way to go for the moment - Plasma was the prefered choice for larger screen sizes however now that 57" and larger LCD can be made economically and with fast response times, and full HD capabilties this has matched the benifits that Plasma had. Remeber as well that LCD will last far longer than PLasma displays and are less prone to damge caused by a fixed image such as station idents.

Both technologies produce extremely good pictures and have sharp clarity. They are both still on the market as they are exceptionally good for their own reasons.
Independant Researchers have split the two types into 2 catergories as they are targeted and different customer needs, so:
LCD = Best for Gaming, General TV Viewing and works well in brightly lit area's. The Screens are available in small sizes
PLASMA = Best for Watching Sports and fast action Movies. Works well in dark conditions. Screen sizes start from 37" +

I believe you have to refill plasma screens so that's a bit annoying. LCD's are definitely the way to go and are pretty clear!

LCD, Sony HDTV 42"-Bravia , best TV out there. You will need HD cable box, or HD satellite box because that TV is HD-Ready, which means it will display the HD picture, but it does not have the HD tuner built in.
