On the whole I have a positive opinion of the police. It's not a job I would want to have. Having to face drunks, druggies, wife beaters, and then hardened criminals on top of that, on a daily basis, well, you couldn't pay me enough. If I was married to one, I would be living on pins and needles every time they went into work. Anyone who puts their lives at risk in order to make my life safer deserves my respect.
That being said, there are rotten apples in every field from the police department to the mail carriers to politicians. You can't judge an entire professional field by just a few people.

With so much negative press about the police it's is often difficult to view them in a positive light. Remember the thing highlighted by the press are not the norm. I think most police departments in American do a good job and have a genuine concern for the citizens they serve.

Both - and + it depends on where you live , if you live in a small town like i do it is a - but in other places it is a + . A friend of mine is a sheriff and i think they do a better job of taking care of thing's than the city police . For instance ------- the city police here had a female down on the ground that they were trying to arrest she was laying on top of her dog . Her son was standing there with a leash and they reached down and grabbed her to put the cuffs on this is after a 20 min time period had gone by , the dog did what it had been taught protect and the cop shot the dog in the head . I asked why didn't you call animal control and was told they don't work on the weekends . But guess who came out and picked up the dead dog out of the street , animal control
SO both - and positive

The police are out there to help. They are busting their butts 24 hours a day every day of the year. Most agencies are understaffed and underfunded. If you act normally and have no legal issues, you should never be in contact with an officer.
If you have a crime happen to you, an officer will be the one that is there to help you, anytime of the day or night.
If you are a criminal, then you will only see the negative side of police.
I worked in a jail for three years, and I thought the world hated me and my co-workers. I went out onto patrol and I was shocked to find out that most of the people loved having us around. I learned that a very small minority of people hate police.

Positive all the way... I respect our police because of their line of work and that they're out there to help people while running the risk of people wanting to hurt or kill them just because of the uniform they wear.

I love seeing them around, it makes me feel safe, especially in my city. I like for them to be around to get the speeding, negligent people and bust them. Whenever I see one, I smile and wave. They are sooo cute!
