My favourite is Makers Mark. As for a cocktail, here's the recipe for a Mint Julep :
12 fresh mint leaves
2 1/2 shots bourbon
3/4 shot sugar syrup
3 dashes Angostura bitters
Bruise mint in the baseof the shaker. Add the other ingredients, shake with ice and strain into Collins glass half filled with crushed ice. Churn the drink with the crushed ice using a bar spoon. Top up the glass with more crushed ice and churn again. Repeat this process until the drink fills the glass. Serve.

I like Booker's, Knob Creek, Makers Mark.
You do not make cocktails with good bourbon, have a shot or on the rocks.
If you want a cocktail get the cheap stuff and mix it with what ever you want.

Love a Wild Turkey single barrel.
As for a mix-i agree with the suggested mint julep. Simple, classic, tasty-hard to beat.
Can be varied as well: Try smacking the mint to bring out the flavour. 2 shots of bourbon-try without the the bitters and sprinkle a little sugar on the mint leaves-the abrasion helps when you muddle.
Whatever you make needs to be balanced and not overpowering in alcohol taste. Practice, practice, practice.
And remember the bartenders taster- straw in drink-finger on straw-draw straw out with finger on top-drop contents of straw into awaiting mouth-adjust flavour if needed-
repeat if necessary! (fresh straw if drink is for someone else)
