The "boons" and "curses" of Science are only results of how man uses them. For example, you can use a brick to build a house (boon) you can use it to break someone's head (curse).

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Some liken science to the "Tree of good and evil". Some say it is trying to understand the mind of God, (some say that is bad and others good). Without it where would we be? Undoubtedly a smaller population still in huts and caves. Science was that which helped us to understand life and make our lot a better one while in the huts and caves, and gave us our civilization by freeing us and giving us time to build it. It is obviously a boon and a curse and each and everyone of us will give each a proper value to it accordingly.

It is not the science that should be deemed as positive/negative...those that use & manage the sciences are to be held responsible for the effects of such.
We have much to admire of people who turn their ideas into industry & betterment of our Whole (like indoor plumbing--LOL)...and just as much to disdain for the unleashing of techs that are destroying our humanity (oil energy). We know wiser, and have for a very long time.
Keep in mind that most of our experience with sciences & "new" technologies is 20-50 yrs. old or more before publicly released...and many folks who created outstanding innovations were quickly & quietly "removed" before expelling them--i.e. crystal energy & alcohol tablets were invented & proved during our first oil crisis, but you probably never even heard of them. A vehicular carborater was prototyped & accidently placed in a publicly bought car that allowed over 200 MPG--this was about 30 yrs. ago...it was quietly re-acquired when the owner returned the car to the dealership thinking something was wrong with his fuel gauge...And we really need to spend billions going beyond our atmosphere in primative vehicles when dimensional portals were told of waaaay long ago, yet only recently did Quantum theory become everyday conversation...See???
Ever wonder how quickly we went from radio waves to t.v./satellite technology only a few years after Roswell? Makes one think, yes???
Some sciences produce positive results, others not...some simply supply info to the "mysteries" of life & history that provide entertainment value alone. And there are users & abusers of them all...just like anything else. Makes life interesting, to say the least! LOL

Which science? Which period? This is like saying is it good that the human race evolved. Yes and no, but there are far too many pro's and con's to even begin to answer your question.

Effect of science is neither bad nor good. It is effect only and it is our view point that describes it as bad or good.
