The only things I can think of is in the case of Jehovah's Witness's whose religious beliefs are to not accept blood products, and situations where there is a rare blood type and a decreased supply available.
I've been a nurse for ten years, and honestly I've never used it or heard of other nurses using it, but have heard it in conversations regarding people who refuse blood products.

The human blood cannot be made or produced but I have read articles that certain liquids can be added to the blood by transfusions but only for limited amounts and limited time.
the 'life' is in the blood as our God created it to be.
