1. The smell. Not only the smell of the smoke, but that lingering smell in someones hair, coat, shirt... perfume/cologne doesn't cover that smell.

2. The cost. My mom smokes and her packs cost close to $5.00 a pack. She smokes these long, slender toothpick looking things.

1. It's just never appealed to me.
2. My dad used to smoke and it was really annoying.
3. It would be a pain in the butt to always have to interrupt activities to go outside and smoke.
4. I have other things I want to spend my money on.
5. I wouldn't be able to smoke in a lot of public places. (This is in Illinois, by the way, if that makes a difference.)
6. It makes the house all nasty.
7. I would be less likely to be invited to social events where a lot of nonsmokers will be present.
8. I'd rather not look about 50 before I even turn 20.
9. There are cooler ways to die.
I know this is more than two things, but there's no way I could only pick two from this list...

The main reason that I don't smoke is because those members on both sides of my family who smoked have all died comparatively young -- late 50's or early 60's. Those who don't smoke live to their late 80's or beyond.

My mom was 59, and my uncle was 65 when they died of cancer, and they both smoked. My grandfather was 92, my grandmother died two weeks short of her 100th birthday, and my aunt was 97 -- all non-smokers. My dad's dad was 65 when he died of cancer, but my paternal grandmother didn't smoke and lived to be 84.

The other reason is because I have a severe allergy to cigarette smoke. Even being beside a car at a stop sign where the other driver is smoking and has the window open is enough to make me start to cough and wheeze.
