I am trying to decide on a name for my Great Dane kennel. I had previously used the kennel name "Daisyhill Great Danes". My very first, and most wonderful, Dane was named Daisy, hence the name Daisyhill. I have registered a few other Danes under this kennel names about 10 years ago.
I am getting back into Danes again, and although the kennel name "Daisyhill" has a lot of sentimental value, I don't know if it's a very professional name. My other options are Copper Creek Danes or Copper Mountian Danes. Should I honor my beloved Daisy and keep "Daisyhill", or change to a Copper kennel name?

There were only very few Danes added to the Daisyhill name because I was being ethical. Daisy, who I wanted to breed so desperately, I did not because she had Demodex as a puppy. I will not even entertain breeding unless sires and dams are American champions, have had all health testing done, and the breeding pair compliments eachother.

Wow, I had no idea people here could know everything about you by asking one simple question. Like assumming all I'm doing is adding to the huge abandoned Great Dane population out there. First of all, I haven't bred a single Great Dane yet in my life. The Danes I've added to my kennel name were suffixes not prefixes. And if you don't know what I mean, don't leave a comment. Not to say that I won't in the future, if the perfect pair of dogs comes my way, consider breeding the pair. Second of all, I am active in my local Dane Rescue. I am part of a group of very ethical Dane owners/lovers/potential breeders that have extensive contracts when placing a Dane, including a clause that REQUIRES, that if for any reason the person can't keep the Dane, it will be returned to use, not placed in a shelter or rescue. But I'm sure those of you that left unfavorable comments, already know this 'cause you know everything about everybody for 5 sentences on the internet.

I like Daisyhill Great Danes and you could use a picture of your beloved Daisy as a logo.

I have to tell you, the name doesn't mean near as much as the "responsibility" taken in inproving this incredible breed. People are not going to go to you because of a name, but because of your reputation for being a responsible breeder. Daisyhill is perfect - can you say the same for the quality you are looking to produce? I have a hard time supporting those who think that "no one" should be breeding, and yet I hate the fact that so many Danes end up in shelters - Spend your time improving the breed, qualifying new owners, follow up with new homes, and be ready willing and able to take every one of those puppies back into your home should it be necessary. If you can truly say that you are ready for that kind of a commitment - "Daisyhill Great Dane's" is perfect - but if you are not ready to be responsible for each and every puppy that you intend to produce - to the point of giving them a home for life - Please Don't start something that you can't commit to. Danes are a special breed, they are warm dedicated, loyal, and just big babies ready to give you their all, do the same for them - then you can call yourself a Dane Kennel. Best Wishes - and I hope that 5 years from now, Daisyhill Great Danes will be found on AKC's referal List as a highly recommended breeder.

I agree with "Dane Lover". I had the best working Great Dane on the West Coast in the 1960's. She had "Will Judy's" in Novice and Open, and many "Best In Shows". I could never finish her in Utility because she started having trouble with Hip Dysplasia. She couldn't jump anymore, so I retired her. She was a tracking and relay racing dog. Took her to "Top Dog" in California for 8 years in a row. She was one of the best dogs I ever had.
Great Danes are a wonderful breed. A breed that does need to be bred responsibly. They have so many inherited problems. They don't have a reputation for longevity. You don't want a bad name in the business, and word does get around, Dane people do talk. If you breed only quality Danes, you won't have any problem finding quality homes for them.
I would suggest if your dog "Daisy" meant so much to you, keep the kennel name as it is. I know I would.

How 'bout you combine them, something like Copper Creek's Daisyhill Danes.
Either way I think you should keep the memory of Daisy involved in the kennel. It shows that you're not in it for the money, but really care about Great Danes and their families.

I would stay with Daisyhill, but that's just my opinion. It's a wonderful way to keep her memory alive. I don't think it's the name that makes the kennel, anyhow - it's whats coming out of the kennel that really counts.
i personally feel i'm destined to run a Great Dane rescue/sanctuary when i win the lottery one day. I'll call it: The Gracious Dane (i had a sweet dane named Gracie that came up missing about 2 years ago, and i'd love to honor her). It also sounds like a good pub name. =)
I wish you many a slobbery dane smooch and bunches of luck!

Breeding more Danes! Why don't you save a few lives instead. I have to turn down rescuing dozens of Danes weekly because shelters usually kill them quickly to save room. I have been rescuing for 5 years now and placed over 60 Danes into homes. You aren't helping a bit. Thanks for your concern over the Breed! They kill champions too if turned in to the shelter.
