My Puggle is one year old and was put on Prednisone for an allergic skin problem. He has never taken this medication before and he's been on it for a week now and we are beginning to wean him off of it. I am worried because he has always been full of energy and very loving. Since he began taking this medication he is totally different. He seems very moody and all he does is sleep and when he is sleeping he doesn't cuddle like he ALWAYS has in the past. I know they said it may cause him to be more hungry and thirsty but I am scared that he won't go back to the same dog he was before he took the meds. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their dog? Any suggestions or reassuring words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your feedback.

I would be more worried that he would have allergies all his life. Pugs are prone to allergies, but since this is a mix it is more unusual for him to suffer with them. I hope he does well and is able to get by without repeated corticosteroids. You might try benadryl in the future if he doesn't have a severe allergic attack.

And yes he will be fine. Corticosteroids can make people feel "funny" not quite dizzy, but off center. He probably just doesn't feel well from them.

HI,
Yes the prednisolone can make him feel like this, along with the increased appetite and thirst.
He should be fine after you've finished weaning him off them.
If his skin problem is not too severe you can ask your vet if you can try prition instead, there are less side effect issues with this anti histamine.

If the skin is particularly bad there are now allergy tests you can have done, but they are not cheap!
They can isolate weather the allergy is fleas, environmental or food, this way you can start excluding whatever your little chap maybe allergic too.
They can also do a de sensitizing vaccine for dogs that are for instance allergic to pollens or environmental agents, if you have insurance this is well worth looking into.
Good luck your dog should be fine

My dog had to take Prednisone too! My dog didn't cuddle like he always did too! The Prednisone just makes them drowsy, hungry, and thirsty. As soon as he doesn't need to take the Prednisone anymore he'll go back to normal. My dog did!

yep that can be from the pred - he should return to normal as he's weaned off. But do recall he's just leaving pupyhood behind so he will mature some mentally as well as physically, so he may get a tad less playfull and energetic.
