They used to have these guys who knew certain phrases and they would go to the top of these towers, and shout out the call to prayer.

There are so few of these guys that they started recording them on records, so they could play out the call to prayer without the man.

Then someone invented loudspeakers, and the rest is history.

A lot of mosques have room for people inside and more space for people praying outside. Think of Diana's funeral service.

I'm not an expert, but is it a call to prayer 'during' prayer times as in the question, or before it like church bells? The idea is that you get to church before the bells stop.

It's a call to prayer. Exactly the same reason why bells ring in the Christian church.

Its a call to prayer. It is called Azan. And the jist of azan is that God is the greatest, I testify that the God is one and Mohammad is His prophet and then an invitation to come to prayers and an invitation to come to goodness. In this way, sometimes when one is stuck in mundane daily chores and liable to forget prayer time, one is reminded.

Have you been to a big pentecostal church? They could not exist without a PA system - for the same reason.

They are calling the faithful to prayer and the more decibels they can muster they wider audience they will get.
Just the use of modern technology.

So people know when to go to pray there. Most people have receivers in their homes which alert them when their nearest mosque is getting ready for prayer.

its the call of prayer, & cities are alot more noisey than they used to be. (when you hear it you should head to the mosque)
