Ok, here's the scoop. I've been doing both for 4 years. Yoga is a series of postures designed to build strength, flexibility, and balance in the entire body - the focus of yoga is on all muscle groups. Pilates is a series of floor exercises and 'prop' exercises (baton, ball, etc.) that focus on building strength in the core - which basically means it's an abdominal workout.

You can find yoga classes that are very difficult and have an aerobic component, but you won't get an aerobic workout via pilates. So it all depends on what kind of exercise you are looking for - whole body or abs.

Nope! I believe that pilates came into being as some modified form of yoga... not sure on that though.

Pilates can be a little more rigorous, since it has more repititions. They are very similar in the sense that they both work on flexibility and strengthening your core. There are many different types of yoga, focused on a variety of things (relaxation, balance, strength, etc), but I think pilates is a little more limited. You can probably read about the roots of both at wikipedia.com , if you want to. :)

No, not quite. Pilates and yoga both centre on the core but pilates is more energising I find. Yoga sends me to sleep - great at night, pilates works in the mornings!

um, no they are completely worded differently.

yoga is the original version of meditative stretching and "exercising"...pillates is the modern version, its more based on physical aspect of health, yoga is both physical and spiritual.
