Why does religion need so many rules?

It was Jesus’ last night on earth. On that night, Jesus told his faithful apostles many important things. Among them was a command regarding a quality that would prove to be an identifying mark of his followers. “I am giving you a NEW commandment,” he said, “that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves.”—John 13:34, 35.

TRUE Christians are to display self-sacrificing love for one another and put the needs of their fellow believers ahead of their own. They should not hesitate even to ‘surrender their soul in behalf of their friends.’ (John 15:13)
And we must “go on carrying the burdens of one another, and thus fulfill the law of the Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

REAL Christians apply this command and therefore do not need to worry about the other commandments, as LOVE for Christ and Neighbour would prevent us from doing anything sinful to another anyway.

Well, if one wanted to "get down to a list" -- it would be quite lengthy indeed !!
And, it is NOT religion that "needs so many rules" -- it is people -- and, it is because, by the natural order of human behavior -- people are wanderers -- and, in order to lead a more upright and purer life -- one must be targeted to a straighter and narrower pathway -- therefore, "the rules"---

I don't see posts asking "why are there so many laws governing the highways and traffic ??" Yet, there are hundreds upon hundreds OF them !! And, reason is, like the "pathway to Heaven" -- there is a need to regulate how people conduct themselves "out on the road" --- This is done for the individual's safety as well as the safety of everyone else !!

One great "rule" to live by -- is -- simply to love God and sincerely want to live an upright life --- this will cover a LOT of ground in keeping a person "between the margins" and straight ahead with the way they live and how they live before God AND mankind !!!

Other than the 10 commandments, the other things mentioned in the Bible should be thought of more like guidelines in my opinion, not rules per say. Like sex before marriage. Why? Not because sex is bad or evil but because once you do it the first time, it is easier to do it the second, third etc. Once you have had a few partners, most of us regret one or two, maybe more. So it is more of a guideline to help us live a happier life so you aren't always looking back wishing you did this or wishing you didn't do that. It is really just there to help us, not keep us from having fun. Of course, that just refers to people who believe like that and not really at all to people who don't. Hope that makes a little sense.

I believe some religions have so many rules in order to control people. My relationship is between God and me and I don't need a whole lot of rules to do that.

Here are two other BIG rules we're supposed to follow:

"And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these."

Religion is about rules, but God is about love.

And even if we don't know anything about the Bible, when we get close to God, we will be, without knowing obeying the laws of religion.

Religion doesn't need so much rules, religion has set rules because people have long argued on what God is about and what we should do as believers.

So religion came to explain to us in a way our human minds can absorb what we should be.

I believe: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

How many rules that are in a religion, depends on that particular belief system.

I like to keep it simple and stick with the basics which really matter.

the ten commandments are not mandatory for all religious systems and most rules can be summed up in a good character and a kind heart.

the rules was to point out sin, so that no one had an excuse. the thing is were not under the law since Jesus came died and rose again. but if we love God we will obey the laws cause we want to please him. we also have the understanding the law cant save us, its His loving grace on us that saves us.
