Well, I'll put it in terms of logic (this is not my opinion, really):
The largest religion in the world (by territory and number of countries) is Christianity, by far. There are zealots in any religion, so it follows that there are many, many Christian zealots.
Now, on a personal note, I find that the religion itself tends to encourage this behavior, seeing as it began with one person out to convert and "save" the world. This continues today, and plenty of people believe that it is their duty to bring others to see their "truth".

Believers in any religion (or any other belief or cause) can be zealots. It is not restricted to Christians.
And as for people who call themselves Christians, proclaim it loudly, frequently, and publicly; but yet treat other people badly, well I guess they are all just talk. Saying you are a Christian does not make you one.

I guess the same reason many of us Christians lump all pagans together and assume they worship the devil.. People just don't want to bother to base it on the individual..they just blame the group..kind of like racists....ignorance is bliss..

Because "christiandom" harbours these fruitcakes, and makes no official attempt to distance themselves from them, no doubt because any numbers will do when it comes to lobbying power, and the christian attempts to have a church state..
That's why..?
Maybe it's time to tidy up the house if you are sick and tired of these fruitcakes..

If you can hold on to primitive beliefs in spite of all the evidence to the contrary, then to me, you are a zealot.
