The more expensive olive oil is to be used for dressing a salad of greens. I get a good medium priced oil and use that for cooking.

The cost of the olive oil usually depends on whether or not it is the first press, where it comes from and what kind of olives it is make of.
Olive oil does not have a high heat tolerance so it is usually only used in sauteeing. It is often mixed with real butter for a really rich saute.
If you are frying chicken, fish, potatoes, etc. it is best to use a canola or vegetable oil with a high heat tolerance. It won't smoke and cause your food to taste bitter or burned as olive oil will in frying the above mentioned items.

Yeah, and it's no different from the local name store brands, and that is the truth of it. YOur paing for a famcy name. but the best is the Extra Virgin, not the light or mild. they have little flavor, if you don't like the extra virgin, then don't use olive oil. It's all about the taste, and the others have little flavor, and why pay the price if your just using it to cook with instead of corn or vegetable oil? just buy the cheapest, it is all mae th same way, all from the basic same locations, mostly in Italy, but just as much form the US, and your paying for the Import fees on the high priced stuff, the quality is no better, stick with the $5 bottle or whatever it is for the budget brand, you will not be disapointed

For cooking the "middle of the road" oils are just fine. If you can find it in the store there might also be "blended" olive oil available. It is as the label states olive oil blended with another oil such as canola. If you love the taste of olive oil then the only way to go is Extra Virgin. Find a brand that you like and go with it.

Extra virgin olive oil is the best and most expensive.
It is the first pressing of the olives that gives the best flavor. As the same olives are continuing to be pressed the next grade is virgin olive oil and then just olive oil.
You get what you pay for.

Most of the well known cooks and chefs on TV cook with "Extra Virgin Olive Oil". I do not know how much it costs, but I watch most cooking shows, and that is what they use.
Rachel Ray can come cook for me, anytime she wants. She can bring the E.V. O. O. with her.

You are supposed to use Extra Virgin for the flavor but when you are cooking something that has to be really hot like frying it doesn't stand up to the heat. Other oils are better for frying.

I would say Extra Virgin Olivie Oil is probably the best. The reason why some oils are some xpensive is because they may be organic or infused with herbs or garlic. Personnally, I don't think 22$ is worth it.
