Rather than deal with amateur opinions, I have found that the pro's, both commercial and independent, have given a slight edge to the H-K, from tests run by evaluators from such sources as Guns & Ammo, and Gun Tests magazines.
In such tests, the H-K USP models had fewer malfunctions and NO (0) failures when tested against, not only the Sig-Sauer, but Beretta, Springfield, and S&W models, as well.
The Glock has a slight edge in the economy department , especially with so many used units available on the market. It is the simplest to operate and maintain, As well.
I've run nearly 5,000 rounds through my H-K USP .45ACP, including Hydra-Shok, Cor-Bon, and several equivilent custom handloads, with 0 stoppages EVER, and it's tolerances haven't measureably changed since I first aquired it.
The only negative factors I've dealt with carrying the USP is it's larger size, but I'm a larger guy and LIKE the more impressive size, and the limited availability of carry systems, but I carry concealed in my own unorthodox manner, anyway.
It's mainly personal choice, anyway, so go for it!

There is no "best". All you will get are biased answers and you have already ruled out two good choices. But that's ok. I am going to be vary objective because I don't have a ccw permit nor do I own a 40sw pistol of any kind. For full size concealed carry a Sigarms 229 would work if you have the stature to conceal it. On the smaller side CZ RAMI in .40 would be good as well. I take it that you want a hammer job as far as pistols are concerned.

I don't really think there is a best. The gun that may work best for me may not work best for you. But since you don't want to hear about the XD, which is my personal favorite, How about a Bersa Thunder .380. It's small, light easy to conceal and it shoots great. You could go with the Smith and Wesson M&P .40. Or you could also go with a Rock Island 1911 style pistol. It's full size but it's slender in design thus making it easy to conceal. You could also go with a "belly gun" like a Derringer. There are a lot of choices out there. I recommend heading to a local gun shop handling a few and find out what fits you. Plus shopping for guns is fun.

cant really go wrong with a sig, I love mine. My sig pro sp 2340 (older model, swiss frame german slide & fire control, replaced by sp 2022 german frame usa slide fire control) has been flawless (once through the break in period) 10000 + rounds of .40 s&w and .357 sig and zero problems, my M&P 40 is 4 months old and about 3200 rounds but has already been sent back for repair (mag release failed, kinda strange my smiths usually loose sears and hammers first). My sig sauer p220 finally was sent back for repair (full spring change out, clean fire unit and replace fireing pin) after about 35,000 rounds. and I have to say sigs customer service is much better than smith's.

the sig pro is a medium sized frame so is the p228 and smaller p229, all come in .40 and easily switch to .357 sig.

for carry I love my kahr cw9, inexpensive, reliable, light, accurate and its designed, built and rated for +p ammo. conceals much easier than anything else, its less than an 1" thick. has the ergonomics and bar-dot sights of a sig and a striker fired system like the m&p but with a much smoother trigger (longer and slightly heavier though, needed as it lacks a trigger saftey). also available in .40 and .45 but I'll warn you the 9mm has more felt recoil than my larger .40s and .45s.

Such a wide open question. Everybody has a favorite. My answer? the best all around carry pistol in 40S&W is the one that A) fits your hand B) hits what you aim at C) is the right size for your body style so you can conceal it properly D) is reliable every time.

I have tested most 9mm Parabellum and many .45 ACP pistols but no .40 S&W's. I do not like the Glock, but some people become angry when one says he does not. Come on, guys, it is just a gun, not a god! I find it has severl flaws unacceptable to me for a pistol upon which my life may depend. I suppose the .40 versions work similar to the 9mm or .45 versions of most brands. Overall, I find the Beretta 92 to be the most reliable combat pistol, and the Beretta 96 should be good too. I like the SIG P-220 and P-226, and .40 versions should be good too. I suggest trying Beretta and SIG pistols to see which suits you best. I should warn everyone that I have seen nonsense in gun magazines. Some people blindly quote waht they see in them, but it can be quite ridiculous. Writers differ radically anyhow, e.g. one said the "double-action only" is best for everyone, but Bill Wilson agrees with me that it is junk.

I carry a Glock 27 with extended slide release, with Glock 23 mags (plus a mag gap block), mag extender with drop free mags, 2.5 pound trigger and night sights. I carry in a Don Hume IWB with no thumb break.

Sorry nothing beats a glock....If you just can't handle the Glock then look at the HK USP or one of the many fine Sig offerings, you might like a Khar they are a much overlooked pistol for carry. Glock on baby!

I myself was looking at the Sig 239. It is smaller than a service size handgun but bigger than the Thunder or ppk. I am not a fan of those guns but wanted something small and reliable.
