I use to be a telephonist and deal with the emergency service numbers...and get abused that we did not answer 911
000 is heaps easier, but you can tell the people who watch too much television

I never thought of that but you are right. But with those old dial phones America was more at an advantage because 0 took the longest to dial so dialling 000 took a lot longer than dialling 911 where 1 took the shortest amount of time. Oh, I live in Australia too.

I am an Australian and I have used 000 and when I lived in America I had a chance to dial 911 and it does not make a difference. They are both just as fast to dial. However I suppose if you wanted to be even more faster it would make more sense to just dial the same number 3 times!

I also live in Australia and agree it is easier to call 000, but I think for the sake of safety there should be a Worldwide emergency number that all nations agree upon.
If you were in shock or panicked when you were overseas you could lose precious seconds by dialling the wrong number, 911 in USA, 999 in UK for instance, there could be more variations in other countries, just to add to confusion in an emergency.

I believe (I haven't tried it) that 911 actually diverts to emergency now in Australia because so many visitors rang it and panicked that it didn't answer!
I've had to ring 000 a few times and any number in that situation is difficult! If 911 was engrained in your psyche, your fingers would still shake I'm sure! No difference is the vote!

I understand that modern mobile phones in Australia will respond to the Australian 000, the UK 999 and the USA 911. I don't know if other countries are so thoughtful.

I agree with shesu, I travel a bit and a one number for everywhere would be great to have. I am also an Aussie by the way.
