A Procainamide drip is ordered for 2mg/min. The standard mixture of Procainamide is 2g in 500mL. How many mL/hr should the IV pump be set? ____ml/hr?

I hope this is a mathematical question and you aren't administering a person on the answers provided because you might have to alter the dosage on the patient conditions.
Assuming so, you can solve as follows:

2g in 500ml = 2000mg in 500ml = > 2000/500 =>
4mg of Procainamide in 1 ml of the solution.

Now, the Doctor requested to administer 2mg/min.
However, 4 mg in 1 ml would mean 2 mg in 0.5 ml.
=> 0.5 ml per minute

So, you need to administer 0.5 ml/min

To convert in hours, 0.5 * 60min =>
30 ml/hr should be the setting of IV pump.

However, please, please refer the instruction manual of IV pump and also the doctor to get the final go ahead.

30 ml/hr is the answer. Is this a nursing lesson? Someone has given the correct answer but let us calculate it using the right formula.

OK, let's use the standard formula which is Stock Desired (SD) over time over Stock on Hand (SH) X the Volume or Quantity.

SD ÷ SH X Q
THE GIVEN FACTORS:
>> SD= 2mg / min
>>SH= 2 g (2,000 mg)
>> Q= 500 ml

So to represent the factors:
= 2 mg/min ÷ 2,000 mg X 500 ml

Let us cancel the mg:
= 2 ÷ 2,000 /min X 500 ml

Dividing 2 by 2,000 will give:
= 0.001/min X 500 ml

Multiplying the above figures will give:
= 0.5 ml / min

We need a rate for hour so we will multiply it by 60 min/hr:
=0.5 ml /1 min X 60 min/ hr

Again the min will be cancelled:
=0.5 ml X 60 / hr

Proceed with multiplication, and the final solution will be:
= 30 ml/hr

You're making hard something that's pretty easy. 2 gm/500 ml is 4gm/1000 ml is 4 mg/ml. If you want to deliver 1/2 ml/min, that's 30 ml/hr.
