You can hear it when you knock on them or thump on them a nice knocking/thump sound...so they should be full of juice. You can also ask the produce guy at the store for his advice..they can always help. =o))

you should first select one that has a nice sheen.
then see if the "spot" where it laid on the ground is white or yellow...it should be more yellow...it is an indicator of the sweetness of the melon...then pick it up...it should feel heavier than it looks like it should be...while you are holding it tap your fingers on it...a ripe watermelon is very dense so it produces a full hollow sound because the tap reverberates through the "meat" of the melon...when watermelons are not ripe or have empty spaces in the center, tapping will produce a dull thud...this is because the sound does not travel through the empty space in the center of the melon very well...its like the sound of a broken bat if you've ever tapped one on the sidewalk...

When watermelon is too dense, they are not yet ripe. People tap the watermelon and listen for a 'hollow' sound, as that means it is at the peak of ripeness.
Tap on a few. Some will sound flat, others will have more of an echo or hollow sound.

I ask the produce man to pick it for me. It's always been good. Besides, I forget if it is supposed to sound high & ringing or deep & hollow or what.
One produce man told me to ignore the sound and look for a yellow patch on the rind that shows it was left in the field long enough to ripen. (The yellow patch would be where the melon sat on the ground.)

I bounce them while I'm holding them. If they "snap" then they are yummi and ripe but not to ripe. If they don't do that they are mushy and I put them back. I don't buy the big huge ones I buy the smaller ones so it's easy to tell and so far this has the best advise the produce guy ever gave me.

ok.. on the skin of the watermelons, there are bee tracks. they look like the light brown little marks all over them. if there is a lot of those, it is too sweet. if there is none, it is not ripe. get the one that has a good amount!! lol... and i dont know why people bang on them either lol =]

If it sounds like your head, it's under ripe. If it sounds like your stomach, it's over ripe. If it sounds like your chest, well then it's frickin' perfect. Buy the sonuvagun and take it to the beach and cut it up and eat it!

Should be heavy for it's size. The lower the thump the better the melon.

Knock on it. If it sounds hollow than it's good. If it sounds deep and solid, it's not good.

well, hitting them to hear a full sound, hollow, with body, not solid.
I look for how green they are. the darker, the better.
