Heya Guys,

Im an Aussie Student and will be travelling to California in January. Ive been advised to take mainly travellers cheques as they can be used as currency. Just wondering if any Americans could confirm that for me? I'll be in LA & San Fransisco at all the "touristy" places- but was told places even like maccas will take travellers cheques as cash ( without having to previously cash them in) . Any insight would be fantastic I really dont want to turn up with all these travellers cheques and have to cash them all in individually if they arent accepted as cash! Thanks Heaps !

It's true, I used to use my extra travellers checks to pay for my film developing. I'm not sure if everywhere takes them, but the problem is that you have to have your passport on you to use them.
But, that said, you might want to bring some, and also an ATM card. There are tons of ATMs all over and you can just get some cash. Of course, there is a $2 fee to take out cash, but is that more than you'd pay for your travellers checks?

I am also travelling to India shortly and checked rates at the website of Indian Bank. Traveller Cheques have better rate than currency but there is a 12 Rupees fee per transaction for cashing traveller cheques . I plan to carry most funds in travellers cheques but some in dollar currency also

Sure. Most places will accept them. But they aren't happy to cash in large travelers cheques for a small purchase. Or I wouldn't use them in the bar. But you can always cash in a bit at your hotel so you have some cash on hand.

The airports have money exchange stalls (AU cash for USD). And if you have a bank card or credit with visa or mastercard they CAN be used here at practically any store or restaurant, etc, and practically any other country. I cant imagine a good reason for a travellers check at all. A reasonable amount of cash is always good in case of emergency.

it really depends on the store... each one has their own policy. But most retailers take them.
