I believe we should have an instant background check for every gun sold or transferred. That background check should be looking for a violent criminal history or mental illness.
Other than that, I don't really approve of a whole lot of gun control. Gun registration serves no purpose in preventing crime. It's only use is to give the authorities a convenient list of who owns what guns to make it easier to round them up (the guns and/or the owners too).
The assault weapons ban was a joke, only banning military looking guns, while other guns that were functionally identically were perfectly fine to sell.
I also believe that the 2nd Amendment really does protect our rights to own weapons.

I used to think gun control was a good idea. Not any more.
We would be very naive to think our Govt will protect us if there is an invasion on US soil. We have borders that are wide open. We give out visa's like chewing gum and when they overstay their visa, we have no way of knowing where they are or what they are up to. The 911 terrorists came into the US with legal Visa's. Getting the idea?
Take the illegal immigration issue. They claim 12 to 20 million have crossed the southern border. Where do they get those numbers? 20 yrs of crossing the borders. In 1986 there were 3 x's more than they originally thought. Do the math. 20 million x 3 = 60 million. That's a more believable number. And that's just Mexicans. Now imagine millions more in Visa abusers from other countries all over the world. Now imagine putting 60 to 80 million more people inside the US, although the majority are law abiding citizens, thousands aren't. We have M13 gang members, drug dealers (cartels?), pedafiles, killers, you name it, they're there. How safe will you feel in your home in the next 10 - 20 yrs when this population explodes?
When our Govt stops trying to give away our ports to foreign sources (Dubois,2006), leasing our highways & interstates to foreign sources, when they start enforcing the laws on the books toward illegals, then maybe they can think about gun control. Until then, would you feel safe giving up your weapons? Besides, the NRA is so huge & powerful, they have literally bought Congress through campaign donations. Using the same arguments I've just stated. It'll never happen.

no because if guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have guns. there is a small town in nebraska where they actually made it a misdemeanor to go outside without a gun! the crime rate went from about 45% to an amazing 0! not saying this would work everywhere but it seems to have done the trick there. as long as we have background checks on anyone buying a gun i don't see aproblem with it. look at it like this there will always be crime in the world and there always will be with or without guns. if there were no guns people would be shouting about swords or whatever weapon. if someone really wants to do harm and kill someone they are going to. after all would u rather be shot in the head or pushed out of a window? the end result is exactly the same! in short its the person pulling the trigger that kills not the gun itself. and another point what happens one day when this government goes overboard and starts putting us in camps for our beliefs or whatever reason. not saying that will ever happen but it could. the reason we have the right to bare arms in this country is simple. they wanted the people to be able to stand on thier own. imagine if the british had taken away our guns before the revolutionary war. we would all be speaking with a british accent right now! and think about the civil war. many of the soldiers who fought for the union were private militiamen who used thier OWN weapons instead of army issue. see the movie red dawn. what happens if this country is invaded one day? do you honestly think our military will be able to protect everyone if that happens? no it will be up to ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things but how can they if they take away our constitutional right to have the weapons that people need to defend themselves.

Gun control is not going to stop crime. Most of the idiots committing the crimes don't go through the trouble of getting a carry permit. We need people like me (legally armed) to be able to protect ourselves from those who are H***-bent on committing crimes. Politicians can make all the laws they want and law enforcement can work their fingers to the bone, but like drugs, illegal guns will always find a way into the hands of those who have no business having them.
I think part of the problem with the US having more gun related crimes, if that is indeed the case, probably has a lot to do with our joke of a justice system. Criminals get sentences that mean precisely squat, then their time is reduced to an even more ridiculous number.

For anyone who feels there should be gun control I have a re-write of the constituion for you. Try this on for size.....
A well regulated Media, Being neccessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to print and distribute news copy shall not be infringed.
WHAT!?!? Infringe on your precious freedom of speech? Well then #2 goes, you can be assured, #1 won't be far behind.
Turmoil is caused by the increasing permissiveness the liberal left keeps cramming down our throats. In the olden days we were taught to take RESPONSIBILITY for our actions, starting at around age 8-9. Nowdays it's pushed back to the age of 21!!!!!
Gun control does 2 things. It prevents people from being able to adequately protect themselves in the face of an increasingly violent and remorseless youth, and it enables the criminal element to act on what ever impulses they may have with impunity. Why can't they rob this house, murder the family inside and burn it to the ground? Guns are restricted to the LAWFUL people, just not us criminals!!
Other countries??? Perhaps you've been living under a rock somewhere, but since the draconian gun control laws have been passed in Great Britain and Austrailia, crime in those countries has skyrocketed.

I fail to see what good would be done by creating new laws concerning gun control. By their very definition, criminals do not obey the laws currently in existence, therefore logic would dictate that they would not obey new laws created. As a criminal investigator, I have NEVER worked a case against a criminal where he/she obtained a gun by legal means, nor have I ever worked a case in which a licensed carrier violated the law.
A gun is a tool, just as a motor vehicle is. Have the anti-gun people demanded that driver's licenses be taken away because of all the crimes committed with a vehicle? Of course not, that sounds illogical, but if one were to do a bit of research, you would find that more innocent deaths are caused by careless or illegal operation of a motor vehicle than by guns.
Rather than attempting to control the sale of guns to the law abiding citizens, we should be enforcing the laws already on the books, and increasing the punishments of those who violate these laws.

Absolutely NOT!
Yes we have a high amount of gun related crimes simply because we are the one nation on earth where gun ownership is a Right and not a "Privilege" to be taken away at the whim of politicians.
A gun is simply a weapon. The use of that weapon is determined by the person holding it. The gun doesn't hop around and shoot people at random and reload itself. It takes a person to do that. Don't you think that you might want to focus on the person that uses a gun for bad or illegal purposes and not the gun itself. Skip the excuses of poverty and lack of education that turns inner city kids into thugs. Because if that were true West Virginia would have a murder rate as high as Chicago.
Bottom line is, blaming the guns and the fact that we as a Nation have the right to own them makes people want to use them to kill others is like Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell blaming forks and spoons for making them fat!

As some have already mentioned. Guns themselves are inadement objects. They do not create evil people. Evil people are the problem. Some nations require "of age" men to serve in the military then keep a gun in their homes. (Switzerland) They have astonishinly little violent crime. Would you try to harm someone you knew was trained and armed?
As it has been said, if you outlaw guns.. only outlaws will have guns. Imposing gun control will never prevent the bad guys from having guns. They wont turn in their wepons, they wont decide to be law abiding citizens. And good citizens will be walking targets.

Ask one further question of the situation.
Have the gun control laws passed since John Kennedy was murdered done one thing to end gun violence?
The answer is no.
Some laws can be argued to have forestalled some people from obtaining guns legally. While this is true, it does not account for guns obtained illegally. Guns that were stolen.
And does the risk of any further gun control laws prevent any other forms of violence or murder?
Again, the answer is no.
If people are angry enough to kill others, they'll find a way around gun control laws.

If we force people to license their gun then we can count on the fact if we ever have a dictator government try to take hold they will go to every name on the list to take you and your gun in.
Mental health treatment is needed, closed borders needed. GUN CONTROL NEVER!! GUNS HAVE MADE MANY OTHER COUNTRIES VERY SAFE. BEWARE if our politicians want gun control, they really want people control. What is their real agenda?
